  • Shirakawa-go

The Ogimachi area of Shirakawa-go is famous for its Gassho-zukuri farmhouses. In December 1995, Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, villages with unique landscapes, were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the name 'Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama'. Located at the foot of Mt. Hakusan in the northwestern part of Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a quiet mountain village surrounded by mountains, crisscrossed by rice paddies, and traversed by rivers. At the open-air museum 'Gassho-zukuri Minkaen', 25 'Gassho-zukuri' houses from various parts of Shirakawa-go have been relocated and preserved. The park also features structures built in the style of an ancient rural village, such as temples, water mills, charcoal huts, and stables. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations of traditional crafts like dyeing and weaving, and even try them out themselves. At the Soba Dojo, you can experience making Japanese soba noodles. The Doburoku Festival is held in autumn, where visitors are treated to sweet sake mixed with rice. Inside the Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine, one of the festival venues, there is a Doburoku Festival Hall that uses doll models to introduce the lion dance performed during the festival. The Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory is an excellent spot to overlook the village scenery.

  • Takayama City

Takayama City is a 'castle town' (a town that developed around a feudal lord's castle) built in the 16th century. The entire city is dominated by wooden architecture, and exquisite carpentry skills give Takayama an antique charm. Since ancient times, Hida woodcarving techniques have been considered the best in the country. Hida carpenters have long been recruited to build palaces and houses for the Japanese Imperial Family, and many temples in the Kyoto and Nara regions were also built by Hida master craftsmen. These traditional crafts remain timeless and are considered the essence of Japanese craftsmanship. Many streets in Takayama still maintain an ancient, elegant atmosphere, and there are many historical sites worth exploring. The temples, shrines, and river bridges here have the charm of Kyoto, and in some aspects, they possess a unique appeal that even Kyoto cannot match.

  • Hida Takayama Old Town

The antique Hida Takayama still preserves its old streetscape. With its clean streets and elegant, quiet town atmosphere, it is often called 'Little Kyoto'. Its nostalgic charm, along with hot springs, mountain scenery, delicious ramen, and Hida beef, attracts a steady stream of tourists. Many people learned about Hida Takayama through the animated film 'Your Name'. In fact, this hidden paradise nestled in the mountains has always been beloved by travelers. The famous Sanmachi Suji district is especially fun and full of delicious food; you must try the A5-grade beef sushi when you visit.
