• Language: Japanese, but basic English is also acceptable. There are many Chinese characters in Japanese, so written communication using Chinese characters is also possible.
  
• Currency: The currency unit is Japanese Yen. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 10,000, 5,000, 2,000, and 1,000 Yen, while coins are issued in denominations of 500, 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1 Yen. Please refer to the Bank of Taiwan website for exchange rates (https://rate.bot.com.tw/).
  
• Time difference: Greenwich Mean Time + 9 hours, 1 hour ahead of Taiwan.
  
• Voltage: Japan uses 100 volts AC, but the frequency in eastern Japan is 50 Hz, while in western Japan, such as Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagoya, it is 60 Hz. Major hotels in major cities have 100-volt and 200-volt power outlets, but generally only two-prong plugs can be inserted. Okinawa uses 100-volt two-prong plugs.
  
• Climate: Japan has a temperate maritime climate, with the northernmost part located in the subarctic zone and the southernmost part in the subtropical zone. The rainy season in most areas is from mid-June to mid-July, with heavier rainfall than at other times. Spring and autumn are relatively cool, requiring a jacket and light sweater. Summers are hot, so light clothing such as short-sleeved sportswear is recommended. Winters are cold, so travelers are advised to bring a light coat, a warm jacket or thick sweater, and non-slip and waterproof shoes.

• Telephone communication:
  1. To call Japan from Taiwan: Taiwan International Access Code 002 + Japan Country Code 81 + City/Area Code (omit 0) + Phone Number
  2. Calling Taiwan from Japan: Japan International Password 001010 + Taiwan Country Code 886 + City/Area Code (omit 0) + Phone Number. 3. Local Calls: Public telephones are ubiquitous in Japan, especially around train stations and commercial areas. They come in four colors: red, yellow, pink, and green. You can use 10-yen and 100-yen coins or phone cards to make calls from public telephones. Local calls cost 10 yen per minute; using a prepaid phone card is the most convenient method.
  4. Phone cards: There are two types, 500 yen and 1000 yen. A 1000 yen phone card allows you to make 105 calls at 10 yen each. Most phone booths have automatic phone card vending machines, and they are also sold in convenience stores and station shops. Beautifully made souvenir phone cards are also sold in scenic areas. Although they are more expensive and contain fewer units, they are collectible.
  
• Starting in October 2014, Japan included consumable goods in the tax-free category. The relevant details are as follows:
  1. Consumable items: Food/beverages/pharmacy/cosmetics
  ※ Purchase process: Buyer presents passport > Store makes "Purchase Record Ticket" and affixes it to passport > Buyer signs "Purchaser's Oath" > Goods are sealed in box or bag.
  * This applies only to non-Japanese residents who spend 5,000 yen or more, but not exceeding 500,000 yen, at the same store on the same day.
  * The item must be taken out of the country within 30 days from the date of purchase.
  * Purchase record ticket and instructions for sealing boxes/bags: The purchase record ticket must be submitted upon passing through Japanese customs. Boxes/bags must be sealed with tape and must not be opened or damaged before leaving Japan. The contents of the box must be clearly marked on the outside, along with the words "Do not open before leaving Japan" in Japanese. Bags must be transparent so that the contents are visible.
  ※ List of applicable duty-free shops (with TAX FREE logo)
  2. General Goods: Clothing, apparel, footwear, bags, jewelry, watches, sports equipment, handicrafts.
  ※ Purchase process: Buyer presents passport > Store makes "Purchase Record Ticket" and affixes it to passport > Buyer signs "Purchaser's Oath" > Goods are sealed in box or bag.
  * Limited to non-Japanese residents who make purchases of 5,000 yen or more (excluding tax) at the same store on the same day. * Items must be taken out of the country within six months from the date of purchase.
  * Purchase of record ticket and sealing/bag usage: The record ticket must be submitted when passing through Japanese customs.
  3. Procedures for handling tax exemption:
  ※ Visit designated duty-free counters in stores or department stores displaying the TAX FREE logo.
  ※ Please present your passport (be sure to carry it with you when shopping, as the law stipulates that you cannot process it the next day).
  * Please fill out the purchaser's pledge form. For general goods and consumables purchased at the same store, the amount can be calculated together, but it cannot be combined with goods purchased on the next day.
  * Consumable goods must be packaged in designated bags. Upon departure, the purchase receipt must be affixed to your passport and presented to customs officers for inspection.
