This 5-day tour offers three dedicated opportunities to witness the Aurora Borealis, significantly increasing your chances of a successful sighting. A highlight is a one-night stay at Borealis Basecamp, known for its prime aurora viewing location. The tour also includes a complimentary dog sledding experience, providing a classic Alaskan adventure alongside your Northern Lights quest. You'll explore Fairbanks, the tour's starting point, and have access to various optional activities to enrich your Alaskan journey.
The optimal period for viewing the Northern Lights in Alaska, including Fairbanks, generally spans from late August to late April. During these months, the nights are long and dark, providing the best conditions. While sightings are never guaranteed due to natural variability, planning your trip within this window, especially during the darker winter months, significantly increases your chances of experiencing the spectacular aurora borealis.
The Northern Lights are typically most active and visible during the darkest hours of the night. While this can vary, prime viewing times generally fall between 10:00 PM and 3:00 AM local time. Staying at Borealis Basecamp, which is strategically located away from city light pollution, enhances your chances of catching the aurora during these peak hours. The tour provides dedicated viewing opportunities to align with these times.
The 5-day Alaska Aurora tour is designed to maximize your viewing opportunities by including three separate chances to witness the Aurora Borealis. This multi-night approach accounts for unpredictable weather conditions and aurora activity. Additionally, a key feature is the one-night stay at Borealis Basecamp, an acclaimed location with minimal light pollution, offering an optimal environment for aurora observation and photography.
At Borealis Basecamp, travelers can choose to stay in distinctive Cube or Dome accommodations, specifically designed for unparalleled Northern Lights viewing. These units feature large windows or clear ceilings, allowing guests to comfortably watch the aurora from inside their private space. The remote location minimizes light pollution, providing an immersive and intimate experience of the Alaskan wilderness and the aurora.
Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) serves as the primary gateway for reaching Fairbanks. Travelers can fly directly into FAI from major US cities. Once in Fairbanks, various ground transportation options like taxis, ride-sharing services, or pre-arranged shuttles are available to reach your hotel or designated meeting point for the start of the tour. It's advisable to arrange onward transportation from the airport in advance.
The 5-day Alaska Aurora tour includes three Northern Lights viewing sessions and a complimentary dog sledding experience per person, valid for bookings through December 31, 2025. This allows guests to enjoy a traditional Alaskan winter sport. The itinerary also features explorations of Fairbanks and opportunities to participate in various optional activities to further immerse yourself in the local culture and natural beauty.
In Fairbanks, beyond the Northern Lights, you can explore local attractions such as the Fountainhead Auto Museum, University of Alaska Museum of the North, or stroll through downtown. Optional activities often available include ice fishing, snowmobiling, visiting hot springs, or exploring ice sculpture parks (seasonal). These activities provide a glimpse into Alaskan life and culture during your 5-day aurora adventure.
