The area is also known for its rich biodiversity and serene mountain atmosphere. For a cultural touch, some itineraries include exploring local flavors at Luodong Night Market.
Taipingshan's signature highlights include Cueifeng Lake, Taiwan's largest alpine lake, renowned for its misty beauty and stunning sunrises. Another prominent feature is Jiuzhize Hot Springs, where visitors can enjoy various hot spring pools and unique hot spring cooking. The region also boasts lush ancient forests, historic logging trails like the Jiancing Historic Trail, and diverse flora and fauna, offering rich opportunities for hiking and nature observation.
Jiuzhize Hot Springs offers several natural hot spring pools for relaxation, including public and private options. A unique experience available is hot spring cooking, where visitors can use the geothermal heat to prepare food like eggs and corn in specially designed cooking areas. The facility typically provides changing rooms, showers, and a visitor center, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable thermal spa experience amidst the natural surroundings.
Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area's main service station is located at an elevation of approximately 1,950 meters (about 6,400 feet). Due to its high altitude, the environment is characterized by cool temperatures, especially in the mornings and evenings, and often experiences mist or fog. Visitors should be prepared for varying weather conditions, bring warm clothing layering options, and be aware of potential altitude effects, although generally mild for most travelers.
For a convenient and hassle-free journey to Taipingshan, many travelers opt for small group tours that offer direct transportation. These tours often include pickup services from central locations in cities like Taipei and Yilan Railway Station, providing comfortable transfers in vehicles such as 9-seater vans. This eliminates the need for navigating public transport or driving winding mountain roads, ensuring a smooth travel experience.
The sunrise at Cueifeng Lake is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and serene atmosphere. As Taiwan's largest alpine lake, the combination of its high-altitude setting, often-present mist, and the tranquil reflections of the surrounding forests creates a truly unique spectacle. Witnessing the first light of day emerge over the pristine lake and mountain landscape offers a profound and memorable connection with nature, especially during cooler seasons.
Taipingshan offers distinct charms throughout the year. For the iconic sunrise over Cueifeng Lake and crisp mountain air, the cooler, drier months from autumn to early spring (October to March) are often recommended, with clear skies increasing chances for a spectacular view. This period, including New Year's, is ideal for those seeking a refreshing natural escape and enjoying the hot springs. Summers are lush but may have more rain and fog.
