FAQ

1. Why is Prague Castle considered a significant historical landmark in Prague?

Prague Castle's significance lies in its millennium-long history as the seat of Bohemian kings, Holy Roman emperors, and Czechoslovakian/Czech presidents. It houses St. Vitus Cathedral, St. George's Basilica, royal palaces, and gardens, showcasing architectural styles from Romanesque to Gothic and Baroque. Its role as a political and spiritual center has profoundly shaped Czech history and culture.

2. Is Prague Castle truly the oldest continually inhabited castle in the world?

While Prague Castle is undoubtedly one of the oldest and largest castle complexes globally, with construction beginning in the 9th century, it is not definitively the oldest continually inhabited castle in the world. Several other castles worldwide also claim this distinction. However, its continuous function as a seat of power for over a thousand years makes it exceptionally significant historically.

3. Is Prague Castle recognized as the largest ancient castle complex globally?

Yes, Prague Castle holds the Guinness World Record as the largest ancient castle complex in the world. Spanning an area of almost 70,000 square meters, it comprises a vast collection of palaces, churches, gardens, and defensive buildings. Its immense size and architectural diversity reflect centuries of development and expansion as the historical seat of power.

4. What are the entry options for visiting Prague Castle?

Visitors can enter the general exterior grounds of Prague Castle, including courtyards and some gardens, without a ticket. However, to access specific historical buildings like St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica, and Golden Lane, a valid admission ticket is required. Tickets typically offer various circuits covering different attractions within the complex. 6. What are the recommended transportation options for reaching Prague Castle?

To reach Prague Castle, public transport is highly recommended. You can take Tram 22 to stops like Pražský hrad or Pohořelec, which are a short, scenic walk from the castle entrances. Alternatively, the Malostranská metro station (Line A) is located at the bottom of the castle hill, requiring an uphill walk through the picturesque Lesser Town. Taxis or ride-sharing services are also an option for direct travel.

7. What can visitors expect to see during a river cruise in Prague?
