Mérida, Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende, and the Yucatan Peninsula destinations like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel are generally considered some of the safest places for tourists in Mexico, particularly in the Yucatan region and popular coastal areas. Mérida, the capital of Yucatan, is known for its low crime rate and welcoming atmosphere. Puerto Vallarta offers a combination of natural beauty and cultural attractions and is generally considered safe for visitors. San Miguel de Allende is noted for its stunning architecture and generally safe environment.

The best months to visit Mexico are from December to April, the dry season, offering sunny, dry, and low-humidity conditions perfect for coastal areas, the Riviera Maya, and high-altitude cities. For wildlife, the dry season also coincides with whale watching in Baja and Monarch butterflies in central Mexico. The prime dry season has the driest months being January and February, with sunny days, cool nights, and low humidity across most of the country. November through April offers the best conditions for beaches, diving, and general relaxation with minimal rain.

In 2025, official travel alerts rate Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun is located, at a normal caution level. This is comparable to the caution level in many large U.S. cities. As compared to some U.S. cities, Cancun shows relatively less petty theft. However, it is always best to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings.
