Addu Atoll

Getting to Addu Atoll involves flying into Velana International Airport in Malé. From Malé, you'll take a domestic flight to Gan International Airport in Addu Atoll. Equator Village, located very close to the airport, is a welcoming spot and an ideal starting point for exploring Addu Atoll.

Addu Atoll, situated south of the equator, is the southernmost atoll in the Maldives. Gan Island is the most southerly point at latitude 0° 42'S. The atoll comprises four inhabited islands and approximately 20 small uninhabited islands and sandbars.

The dialect spoken in Addu Atoll, known as Addu bahuruva, is notably different from the standard Dhivehi language. It shares some similarities with the dialect spoken in Fuvahmulah. Historically, educated islanders from the three southern atolls adopted the Addu dialect as a common language.

Addu Atoll is rich in Maldivian history and culture. During World War II, it held strategic importance, with the British establishing a Royal Air Force base on Gan Island. Remnants of this era, including causeways and colonial buildings, still hint at its past.
