Kurobe Gorge

Kurobe Gorge is located in eastern Toyama Prefecture in northern Central Japan, set within the Chubu-Sangaku National Park.

The best times are autumn (late October to mid-November) for brilliant foliage, and spring/summer for lush greenery. The sight-seeing train operates from late April to November and closes during winter.

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station, transfer to the Toyama Chito Railway to Unazuki Onsen Station, then walk to Unazuki Station to catch the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

Key attractions include riding the open-air Kurobe Gorge Railway, crossing the iconic Okukane Bridge, relaxing at Keyakidaira footbaths, and walking along Sarutobi Gorge.

A full day is ideal to ride the train and hike around Keyakidaira. Staying overnight at Unazuki Onsen is highly recommended for a relaxing experience.

Advance reservation is strongly recommended during peak autumn foliage season, though tickets can often be purchased on-site during quieter months.

Try fresh Toyama Bay white shrimp, Toyama Black Ramen, craft beer from Unazuki, and traditional hot spring steamed buns.

Unazuki Onsen, located at the entry point of the gorge, offers excellent traditional ryokans with scenic mountain hot springs.

Yes, the scenic train ride requires minimal walking, and main stops like Keyakidaira feature well-maintained, gentle walking paths.

You can easily combine your visit with the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, Toyama City, Kanazawa, or Hida Takayama.
