Whether you’re grabbing a bite to eat before starting your group adventure for the night or you just really love food, Taipei has all kinds of flavorful dishes for you and your friends to try and share with each other. And there’s no better way to experience Taipei’s food culture than a trip through a night market. Filled with stalls selling all sorts of food and drinks, Taipei’s night markets are your one-stop shop to get a taste of what Taipei has to offer.

Jump right into Taipei’s night market culture by taking your friends to Shilin Night Market. Explore the streets and let everyone grab a different dish that the whole group can share. Since it’s one of Taipei’s bigger markets, it can get pretty crowded; but there’s a lot of variety and food options for everyone. If you’re adverse to crowds or want a more local experience, there are many smaller markets around the city. Some even have tables so you can sit down and talk with friends as you eat.

Taipei is full of great bars to share a drink or two with friends and catch up on each other’s lives. The city’s public transportation and walkability also provide a great opportunity for barhoppers. There are even pub crawls that you can try with friends to keep the party going late into the night.

If you’re looking for a more intimate setting, though, be sure to make a stop at Ounce, Taiwan’s first speakeasy. Once you get into the bar via an entrance through a cafe, you can settle down for a relaxing evening with friends. As for drinks, just let the bartender know what you enjoy and they’ll create something to suit your taste. It’s a fabulous way to get something unique for everyone in the group.

Feel the Music

Let loose and move to the music at one of Taipei’s clubs. The city caters to all kinds of crowds, from university students to expats. There’s a place and dancefloor for everyone. Take note that most clubs and lounges in Taipei do charge a cover fee, but drinks are often included in the price.

Dress up and spend a classy evening at Barcode, one of Taipei’s more upscale lounges. The cover fee is higher than most clubs (500 TWD) and it enforces a strict dress code. But the lounge offers undeniably good drinks and the DJs play songs that are fun to dance to. Barcode is also located on the fifth floor and has a pretty nice view of the surrounding district. Plus the modern decor makes for the perfect setting for photos with friends to remember the night.

Taipei also has a thriving music scene and there are many places where bands perform live. If you and your friends prefer listening to music over dancing, Taipei’s music venues cover all kinds of genres: rock, pop, and more. Make sure to catch one of the live acts at Blue Note, a jazz cafe in the Da’an district. Come by early for seats and relax with friends as you listen to the night’s band.

Spend a night in Taipei learning about history and culture through various activities. Most museums are closed by 6:00 PM but a group of friends can still continue to discover the rich cultural heritage within the city.

Learn about Chinese performing arts and culture by watching a show at TaipeiEYE. The center puts on shows every week and its highlight is the Peking opera. There’s no need to worry about understanding the language. Subtitles are provided for viewers so they can follow along with the performance. Since the show doesn’t start until 8:00 PM, you’ll have plenty of time to grab dinner before sitting down for the show with friends.

As the hours go on, bars and clubs might start to close after midnight. But friends can still spend the rest of the night together singing at a nearby karaoke bar. When you’re ready to hit those notes, find the nearest Partyworld or Holiday KTV and book a room for a few hours. Hourly room rates will vary depending on the size of your group, but the price is very reasonable when split among everyone. And some branches are open 24 hours so there’s no need to worry about leaving for the rest of the night.
