Product Info

Bamberg, situated along the Regnitz River in northern Bavaria, offers one of the best-preserved medieval townscapes in Europe. Founded in the early 10th century, it rose to prominence under Henry II, Duke of Bavaria and later Holy Roman Emperor, who envisioned the city as a northern spiritual and political center to rival Rome. His ambitions left a lasting imprint: Bamberg Cathedral, consecrated in 1237, remains the city's focal point and houses the richly sculpted tombs of Henry II and Empress Kunigunde, as well as the only papal grave in Germany, that of Pope Clement II. For nearly a millennium, Bamberg served as a seat of both imperial and episcopal authority, shaping its urban development and cultural significance.

The city’s layout, rising across seven hills, includes ecclesiastical, residential, and commercial quarters that have changed little since the early Middle Ages. The Old Town Hall, strikingly built on an island in the Regnitz, reflects both the architectural ingenuity and independent spirit of the city’s citizens. Legend holds that the structure arose from defiance, when the bishop denied them land, prompting townspeople to create their own by building into the river. Bamberg’s charm also lies in its local traditions, from half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets to the distinct taste of its famed Rauchbier, or smoked beer. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, Bamberg invites visitors to step into a living document of European urban and religious history.
