Start your Northern Lights adventure at a private base at Steam Pier on Kvaløya, just outside Tromsø. Begin the evening indoors at a warm base, with toilet facilities, hot drinks, and a relaxed briefing while you are fitted with full thermal suits and winter boots.
Since you depart from Kvaløya, west of Tromsø, you are already away from the worst of the city's light pollution before the hunt even begins.
Travel in a comfortable, modern minibus in a small group of maximum 16 guests, led by experienced local guides with deep knowledge of the region and years of aurora experience.
Your guides monitor the live cloud cover and aurora forecast and drive to wherever the skies are clearest. Depending on conditions, this can take you along the coast and fjords of Kvaløya and Sommarøy, to spots around Ersfjord and Kattfjord, inland through the valleys, or toward the Lyngen Alps.
When the clear skies are across the border, cross from Norway into Finland — driving through Skibotn and toward the Finnish side near Kilpisjärvi to find them.
When you reach a good location, light a real campfire and enjoy a hot Arctic meal with warm drinks — hot chocolate, coffee, and tea. A vegetarian and vegan option is always available on request.
There is no rush: give the aurora time to appear and dance across the sky, while the guide explains what you are seeing, how the Northern Lights work, and the local stories behind them.
Throughout the night, your guide takes professional photos of you standing beneath the Northern Lights, in the Arctic landscape, and around the campfire. These photos are shared with you free of charge after the tour, so you do not need an expensive camera to take the memories home.
The experience lasts approximately 6 to 8 hours and is flexible — stay out longer when the aurora is active or when you need to travel further, including across the border into Finland, to find clear skies.
