Product Info

  • Kyoto is home to numerous mechanisms designed to protect the capital city, but few people are aware of them. This workshop will explore Kyoto's hidden history through the lens of "fear of the unseen." The first 40 minutes will be spent in a traditional Kyoto townhouse with over 200 years of history, introducing you to yokai (supernatural beings) and the history of Kyoto. The content is enjoyable while being based on expert knowledge. In the second half, you will create your own amulet using washi paper and either an awaji knot or a bow knot. You can choose a pre-made awaji knot, so even those who are not crafty can participate. Materials are included, and you can take your completed amulet home. This is a 90-minute experience you can only have here. *This workshop will be conducted in English (questions and supplementary information in Japanese are also available).
  • A 200-year-old Kyoto townhouse
  • The workshop will take place in a quiet townhouse, just a 6-minute walk from Imadegawa Station in Kyoto. Wooden lattice doors and a noren (traditional Japanese curtain) welcome you. In a tatami-floored room, we will discuss yokai (Japanese spirits/monsters) and the hidden history of Kyoto. Soft light filters in through the shoji screens, and you can see a small courtyard garden.
  • Made with traditional materials
  • We will choose a sheet of paper from Kyoto's Chiyogami or Tosa Washi to make a washi paper amulet. Everyone will fold the origami together, but you can choose to write your own amulet tag or use one that has already been written. You can also choose to make your own Awaji knot or use a pre-made one. This is recommended for both those who want to do everything themselves and those who want a more casual experience.
