Perched on the tip of the small, wooded Lavedo peninsula, which juts out over the waters of central Lake Como, the Villa elegantly overlooks a sweeping panorama, making it one of the most spectacular residences on the lake. The creator of the wonders of Balbianello was Cardinal Durini, a man of letters and a patron of the arts, who, at the end of the 18th century, chose this lakeside spot to establish a retreat for pleasure and literary pursuits. This purpose was revived in modern times by Guido Monzino, an entrepreneur, collector, and avid traveler, who in 1974 made the Villa his retreat, where he meticulously and tastefully preserved the memories of an adventurous life that led him to become the first Italian to reach the summit of Mount Everest. His daily life and his successful exploits are revealed through maps, travel equipment, books, furnishings, and valuable and intriguing collections of ancient and primitive art: everything is still arranged as he wished, including the memorabilia from his renowned mountaineering feats, housed in the fascinating Expeditions Museum. At his behest, in 1988, the Foundation took over the meticulous management of the Villa, preserving its spirit, which is also brought to life in the stunning garden that the FAI maintains with the same painstaking perfection. The garden path winds through boldly pruned trees and romantic vistas, along avenues lined with statues, across panoramic terraces and abundant blooms, culminating in the 18th-century loggia that crowns the entire complex, offering a twofold, elevated view. The beauty and wonder of Balbianello, which can also be accessed from the lake, have been the main reasons why many Hollywood filmmakers have chosen it as the setting for famous sagas, such as Star Wars and 007. You can also purchase the Villa del Balbianello + Velarca combined tour. The tour includes a guided visit of the entire itinerary, lasting approximately 3 hours. The tour departs from Villa del Balbianello, where visitors tour the interior and the garden, then takes them to La Velarca by speedboat for a tour of the historic vessel, before returning to Villa del Balbianello by speedboat to conclude the visit.
