We recommend allocating at least 2 to 3 hours to visit Matsuyama Castle's keep, take the ropeway or chairlift, and stroll through Casiyama Park. This duration is sufficient to thoroughly appreciate the historical artifacts within the keep and admire the cityscape of Matsuyama from various viewpoints. If you wish to explore further, such as visiting Gokoku Shrine or participating in other activities, you can flexibly extend your stay.
Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan's 12 remaining original castles. Construction began in 1602 by Kato Yoshiaki and took approximately 25 years to complete. Its most distinctive feature is its location atop Mount Kashi, earning it the title 'Japan's No. 1 High Castle,' offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea and Matsuyama city. The castle incorporates multiple defensive structures, such as Otemon and Tsutsuido Gates, showcasing the essence and ingenuity of Japanese castle construction techniques from the late Sengoku period to the early Edo period.
Matsuyama Castle is located in the city center of Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, in the Shikoku region of Japan. From JR Matsuyama Station or Matsuyama City Station, you can take a tram to the 'Daikaido' station. From there, it's about a 5-minute walk to the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway/Chairlift Shinonome Entrance Station. The ropeway or chairlift takes approximately 3 minutes to reach the Honmaru Plaza at the summit, offering convenient and easy access.
With this pass, you can explore the keep of Matsuyama Castle and experience its rich history, as well as enjoy easy access up and down the mountain via the ropeway or chairlift, offering city views. At Dogo Onsen, you can choose to bathe at the Honkan (main building) or the Asukano-yu (annex), immersing yourself in Japan's oldest hot spring culture. Additionally, the pass includes a designated drink at Shiragiku Coffee, adding a touch of leisure and elegance to your journey.
Dogo Onsen is renowned for its approximately 3,000-year history, making it one of Japan's oldest hot springs. Its unique charm lies in the tranquil atmosphere of its hot spring town and the majestic Honkan building. It is suitable for all seasons: spring for cherry blossoms, summer for escaping the heat, autumn for fall foliage, and winter for enjoying warm baths. Winter bathing is particularly warm and comfortable, but be mindful of temperature differences. Summer evenings are ideal for strolls and enjoying the cool air. It is recommended to avoid major Japanese holidays like Golden Week to prevent large crowds.
The Dogo Onsen area is located in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, which experiences a milder winter climate compared to northern or mountainous regions of Japan. While occasional snowfall can occur, accumulations are usually light and melt quickly. Therefore, if you are hoping for a snowy landscape, Dogo Onsen is not a primary snow viewing destination. However, there's a chance to experience light snowflakes during cold snaps, adding a touch of romance to your hot spring experience.
Dogo Onsen holds a revered position in Japanese hot spring culture, being honored as one of the 'Three Oldest Springs of Japan' with a history of about 3,000 years. Its Honkan is the first public bathhouse in Japan designated as an Important Cultural Property and served as inspiration for the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's film 'Spirited Away.' It is not just a place to bathe but a symbol of Japanese history and traditional culture, attracting countless travelers seeking an authentic experience.
The most convenient way to travel from Matsuyama city center to Dogo Onsen is by taking a Matsuyama tram (city streetcar). You can board the tram heading towards 'Dogo Onsen' station from major stations like JR Matsuyama Station, Matsuyama City Station, or Daikaido. The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Trams run frequently, and Dogo Onsen Station is very close to the hot spring town and the Dogo Onsen Honkan, within walking distance, making it ideal for independent travelers.
