The months of July and August are considered optimal for experiencing Northern Xinjiang's vibrant scenery, including Kanas Lake and Nalati Grassland. During this period, the grasslands are lush, and the lakes present their most stunning colors, offering picturesque views. Tours are often confirmed to depart in July and August, highlighting this as a prime travel window to enjoy the region's natural beauty.
During July and August, Northern Xinjiang generally experiences pleasant summer weather with warm days, ideal for exploring attractions like Hemu Village and Sayram Lake. As autumn approaches in September, temperatures begin to drop, especially in higher altitude areas. While heavy snowfall is not typical in early September, it can occur at higher elevations or in late September, transitioning the landscape beautifully.
Kanas Lake is located in the Altai Mountains region of Northern Xinjiang, China, near the borders with Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia. This region is geographically significant for its pristine natural beauty, featuring diverse landscapes from dense forests and expansive grasslands to alpine lakes and snow-capped peaks, making it a key highlight of comprehensive Northern Xinjiang tours.
Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and is primarily considered part of Northern Xinjiang. Its strategic location makes it the main gateway for international travelers, serving as the typical starting and ending point for most Northern Xinjiang tours. Convenient direct flights to Urumqi facilitate easy access to the region's diverse attractions.
While Northern Xinjiang includes areas with varying elevations, many popular attractions like Kanas Lake are generally not at extremely high altitudes that commonly induce severe altitude sickness for most visitors. It is always advisable to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity upon arrival, and allow your body to acclimatize. Consult a doctor if you have specific health concerns before traveling to elevated regions.
Northern Xinjiang, with its focus on destinations like Hemu Village, Sayram Lake, and Nalati Grassland, is renowned for its lush grasslands, alpine lakes, vast forests, and diverse natural landscapes. The travel experience here emphasizes scenic beauty, ethnic minority cultures, and outdoor activities. Southern Xinjiang, in contrast, is characterized by its desert landscapes, ancient Silk Road cities, and a stronger emphasis on Uyghur culture and historical sites.
Due to its western geographical location, Northern Xinjiang experiences significantly longer daylight hours during peak summer months like July and August compared to eastern regions. This extended daylight allows for more comprehensive sightseeing and flexible daily itineraries, enabling travelers to explore multiple attractions such as Nalati Grassland or Devil's City at a relaxed pace and enjoy scenic views well into the evening.
For international travelers, the most common and convenient method to reach Urumqi, the gateway to Northern Xinjiang, is by air.
