If you're visiting Yanbaru Forest for the first time, we recommend starting with a walk through the forest accompanied by an interpreter (nature guide). The guide will share interesting anecdotes about the natural changes that occur with the seasons, the ecology of plants and animals, and the relationship between the local people and nature. There are three nature trails to choose from, and you can consult with the interpreter to choose one that suits your physical strength and interests. The walk takes about two hours.
Yamashishi Course
This 1km-long nature trail reuses the footpath along the ridge that was used to transport timber and firewood during the post-war reconstruction period. Highlights include the layered structure of the Yanbaru forest, visible from the 17m-high canopy terrace for observing the treetops, and the magnificent colony of tree ferns (kurohego) that has grown directly below the suspension bridge over a small stream. Attaby Pond, at the end of the trail, is a small pond that stands alone in the forest, but it is the perfect place to observe the connections between living creatures, especially tadpoles.
Yonner Course
This is a wide, 650m-long nature trail designed with universal design. The trail is gentle throughout and wheelchair accessible, making it safe for everyone, including seniors and those with children. Along the trail, you can observe a variety of small birds that use the treetops, including Ryukyu woodpigeons and Noguchi's woodpeckers, and depending on the season, you may even hear the cries of Ishikawa frogs and Holst frogs from the streams. (Yonna means "slowly" or "leisurely" in the Okinawan dialect.)
