- Limited time photo exhibition -
Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (K・MoPA, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture) will hold the first half of its 30th anniversary exhibition, "Adventures in Photography: From the Avant-Garde to the Future," from Thursday, March 20th (national holiday) to Sunday, June 15th, 2025.
The museum's opening exhibition in 1995 began with "Photographs by 25 People in Their 20s," showcasing works by some of Japan's most representative postwar photographers, with the aim of inspiring and encouraging young photographers.
As a homage to that past, the 30th anniversary exhibition will be held in two parts, carefully selecting "25 U35 (under 35) photographs" from the KMoPA collection of over 10,000 pieces, from a new perspective, to reexamine the origins of photography and of KMoPA itself. The first part will be an "adventure" using the new technology and visual sense of photography. The second part (held from July to October) will be themed on "portraits," which was the catalyst for the invention of photography in the first place.
Photography has the potential to revolutionize human vision and thought. This exhibition introduces a variety of experimental works that have been produced since the invention of photography, from the world's first abstract photograph (Alvin Langdon Coburn's "Votograph"), to surrealism (Clarence John Laughlin and others), science fiction photography (Naito Masatoshi), collage (Victor Cohen and others), multiple exposure (Kitano Ken and others), and photography taken on film exposed to radiation in the Chernobyl disaster (Ohara Kazuma). See the path of the bold challenges taken by young photographers.
Guest Curator: Aki Kusumoto (Landschaft / Independent Curator, Photo Critic)

Highlights: [Works that are not usually displayed together] As this is the 30th anniversary exhibition of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (KMoPA), we wanted to create an exhibition that connects to the origins of photography and the future of photography. The themes that emerged from this were "Adventure" and "Portrait" (later period). Furthermore, by setting up a category of U35 (under 35 years old), which symbolizes KMoPA, it is not a so-called "photography textbook" type of exhibition. For example, the works of Eugène Atget, who is famous for surrealism, are not featured because they were created in his later years. Instead, you will encounter a number of experimental and adventurous works that are full of the joy and surprise of encountering photography, which can be said to be the origins of photographers. From the world's first abstract photographs to photographs taken on film exposed to radiation from the Chernobyl disaster. Please experience the possibilities of photography, which is a "hybrid system of man and machine" (Taki Koji / art critic).
