<About this Special Exhibition>

[Sep 19-Jan 17 Admission Only] 'Forms of Love: Exhibition of the Legendary Shunga Chigo Zoshi' Exhibition

Love and desire, the earnest emotions of people seeking one another—painters captured these in the form of 'Shunga' (erotic art). It is believed that Shunga existed as early as the Heian period.
The Chigo Zoshi, which will be exhibited to the public for the first time in this exhibition, is an emaki (picture scroll) created in the early 14th century that records the intimate relationships between acolytes and monks along with text. It is considered a legendary Shunga, known to exist only through copies and books.

Also on display is a scroll copied by the Edo-period painter Tani Buncho of the Koshibagaki Zoshi, one of the oldest Shunga in Japan depicting the activities of men and women. Furthermore, we will exhibit hand-painted Shunga by artists such as Tsukioka Settei, Katsushika Hokusai's masterpiece 'Wave and Plover', and works related to 'love' by artists such as Uemura Shoen and Kaburaki Kiyokata.
