    Enjoy a 2-hour Matera walking tour and see this incredible area carved into the hills of Murgia. Then, go sightseeing at Altamura and explore its medieval cathedral.

    Matera's historic center is dug into a deep ravine and is the first UNESCO site in southern Italy. Here people lived in cave houses from prehistoric times until 1952. Visit rock churches with Byzantine frescoes, cave houses, the medieval church, and the noble quarter of this ancient town known as the "Italian Bethlehem". After the walking tour, you'll have one hour of free time for shopping. The historic center is full of trattorias, restaurants, and bars where you can have lunch.

    Leaving Matera, you'll reach Altamura after 30 minutes. Situated on the dominant hills of Murgia within a national park, Altamura has a very interesting historic center with a grand cathedral dating back to the medieval period. The church is famous for its portal adorned with stone decorations. The town is renowned for its typical local bread bearing the high-quality DOP mark. You'll find many stone ovens where you can taste the city's traditional dishes made with wheat.
