-What you can expect-
Spend a full day exploring three Catalan wineries and sampling a selection of their emblematic wines.

Your experience begins at one of the region's most iconic family-run wineries. You'll learn about the cava-making process and visit the historic room where the first bottle of cava was produced more than 150 years ago, gaining insight into the origins of this celebrated sparkling wine.

At the second winery, you'll taste high-quality cava while discovering how traditional artisan methods are preserved, with limited use of modern machinery to maintain authenticity and character.

In the afternoon, you'll visit an organic winery specialising in still white and red wines. Here, you'll learn about wines made from grape varieties such as tempranillo, pinot noir, garnatxa and cabernet sauvignon. The experience concludes with a tasting of several wines, including red, white, rosé and, of course, cava.

It's an ideal escape for wine enthusiasts and those seeking a cultural immersion.

3. How is the name 'Penedès' pronounced?

The name 'Penedès' is pronounced roughly as "peh-neh-DESS" in Catalan. The 'e's are pronounced like the 'e' in "bed," and the 's' at the end is a soft 's' sound. The accent mark over the second 'e' indicates where the stress falls in the word, emphasizing the "DESS" syllable. 5. What makes the Penedès region unique for wine and cava production?

The Penedès region's uniqueness stems from its diverse microclimates and varied terrain, ranging from coastal plains to inland mountains, allowing for a wide array of grape varieties to thrive. It's pioneering in organic and biodynamic viticulture. Penedès is also the birthplace of Cava, Spain's iconic sparkling wine, and has a rich history of innovation in winemaking. 6. How is cava traditionally produced in the Penedès region?

Cava is traditionally produced in the Penedès region using the "traditional method" (méthode champenoise). This involves a secondary fermentation taking place directly in the bottle. After the base wine is bottled with yeast and sugar, it undergoes a long period of aging on its lees, developing complex flavors and fine bubbles. The bottles are then riddled (turned daily) to collect sediment in the neck, which is then disgorged and topped up before final corking.

Key highlights of visiting the Penedès wine region include exploring renowned wineries (bodegas) like Freixenet and Torres, as well as charming family-run estates. Visitors can wander through vast vineyards, often with views of Montserrat mountain. The region's capital, Vilafranca del Penedès, offers a rich history and the Vinseum (Wine Culture Museum of Catalonia). Many tours also include traditional Catalan lunches, making for a comprehensive cultural and gastronomic experience.
