Okinawa's Phantom Island, also known as Hamajima, is a small, pristine sand island located in the waters near Ishigaki Island. Its unique characteristic is its ephemeral nature; it appears and disappears with the ebb and flow of the tides. When the tide is low, a stunning white sand island emerges, surrounded by the clear turquoise "Kabira Blue" sea, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and photography.
Hamajima earned the moniker "Phantom Island" due to its temporary existence, shaped by tidal movements and ocean currents. It's not a permanent landmass but rather a dynamically formed sand cay. This natural phenomenon contributes to its mystique and ensures that its exact shape and size vary, offering a slightly different experience with each visit, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs.
Yes, Ishigaki Island's Phantom Island, Hamajima, is indeed known for its tidal appearances and disappearances. It is a sand cay that fully emerges at low tide, revealing its pristine white sands. As the tide rises, the island gradually becomes submerged. This natural cycle is what makes visiting the Phantom Island a unique and memorable experience, timed carefully by tour operators.
No, direct swimming or snorkeling is generally not permitted within Kabira Bay itself. Due to the presence of strong currents and for environmental protection, activities like swimming are restricted. However, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking "Kabira Blue" waters from the shore, take scenic walks, or experience the bay's beauty and diverse marine life through a glass-bottom boat tour.
The most convenient way to visit Kabira Bay and Phantom Island (Hamajima) for this tour is by boat from Ishigaki Island. Tour operators typically arrange boat transfers directly to Hamajima for snorkeling, followed by a visit to Kabira Bay. This allows for seamless travel between the locations, making the journey hassle-free and ensuring you arrive at the best times for tidal conditions.
While snorkeling around Ishigaki Island's Phantom Island (Hamajima), you can expect to see a rich variety of vibrant marine life. The clear, shallow waters are home to numerous colorful coral formations and diverse tropical fish, including clownfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish. Lucky snorkelers might also spot sea turtles gracefully gliding through the reefs, creating an unforgettable underwater experience.
Kabira Bay is recognized as a world-class scenic spot, earning three stars in the Michelin Green Guide, primarily for its stunning "Kabira Blue" waters, which display an incredible spectrum of blues and greens. From the glass-bottom boat, you will have a panoramic view into this vibrant underwater world, observing live coral reefs, schools of tropical fish, and other marine organisms without getting wet.
