The Tourist Octopus Card is an extremely convenient payment tool in Hong Kong, widely used for public transport such as the MTR, buses, trams, and ferries, saving you the hassle of buying tickets each time. Additionally, it can be used for small purchases at convenience stores, supermarkets, and fast-food restaurants, eliminating the need to carry a lot of change and making your trip to Hong Kong smoother.
The most convenient purchase and pick-up location for the Tourist Octopus Card is Hong Kong International Airport, where you can get it immediately upon arrival. You can also pre-book through online travel platforms like KKday and pick it up with your voucher at the airport, enjoying a simplified process and ensuring a smooth start to your trip. This saves you time queuing on-site and ensures you have the necessary transportation payment tool from the beginning of your journey.
The Tourist Octopus Card is primarily designed for visitors to Hong Kong, usually comes with pre-loaded value, and can be used immediately after purchase, with some plans allowing for a refund of the remaining balance. A regular adult Octopus Card requires a deposit. Furthermore, this upgraded version of the Tourist Octopus Card offers payment functions beyond Hong Kong, such as using public transport in specific cities in mainland China and Macau, a unique advantage not found in traditional Octopus Cards.
The Tourist Octopus Card is typically designed for immediate use upon purchase, without the need for cumbersome real-name registration procedures like those for SIM cards. Once you buy and receive the card, as long as there is sufficient stored value, you can directly use it for public transportation and small purchases within Hong Kong, making it ideal for short-term visitors.
A major feature of the upgraded Tourist Octopus Card is its expanded usage. In addition to public transport in Hong Kong, it can be used on public transportation in as many as 336 cities in mainland China and in Macau. This provides immense convenience for travelers who frequently visit Hong Kong and Macau or plan to travel to multiple cities in mainland China, offering a single card for all their travel needs.
Taxi services are very common and easy to hail in Hong Kong, primarily accepting cash payments, with some also supporting electronic payments like AlipayHK or WeChat Pay. Ride-sharing services like Uber are also available in Hong Kong, but their coverage and availability may be slightly less than traditional taxis. The Octopus Card itself is not directly used for paying taxi or ride-sharing fares; other payment methods are required.
Currently, when taking public transport such as the MTR, buses, and trams in Hong Kong, the Octopus Card remains the most popular and convenient option. Most public transport services do not yet fully support direct credit card tap-and-go payments. Some emerging electronic payment methods or mobile payment apps may be trialed on specific routes or services, but the Octopus Card is still the most recommended and widely accepted payment choice for travelers.
Besides the Tourist Octopus Card, cash is still a widely accepted payment method for Taiwanese travelers making daily small purchases in Hong Kong. International credit cards (like Visa, Mastercard) are commonly accepted at department stores, large shops, and restaurants. Additionally, some merchants now support popular local mobile payment tools such as AlipayHK or WeChat Pay, although not all small businesses accept them.
