Product Info

Enjoy one of the most fascinating experiences on Rapa Nui with this half-day excursion to Orongo and Rano Kau, a tour that combines archaeology, history, and stunning landscapes.

We'll start our tour at 9:30 a.m. from Hanga Roa, setting off on the journey to the majestic Rano Kau volcano, one of the island's most iconic natural settings.

Our first stop will be at Ana Kai Tangata, also known as the "Cave of the Cannibals." This easily accessible site captivates visitors with its mystical atmosphere and the remains of rock art still preserved inside, depicting seabirds that played a key role in Rapa Nui beliefs.

We'll then continue to the archeological site of Orongo, an ancient ceremonial village located on the western ridge of the Rano Kau volcano. This site is made up of about 53 stone houses with narrow entrances facing the sea, creating a setting steeped in history and mysticism.

The Tangata Manu or "Birdman" ceremony was held in Orongo, the most important ceremony of the island's second period. Every year, brave competitors would descend the cliffs and swim to the islet of Motu Nui to collect the first egg of the manutara bird. The winner bestowed the sacred title on his clan for one year. This ritual continued until about 150 years ago, when the arrival of the first Christian missionaries transformed the island's cultural life.

In addition to its historical and cultural significance, Orongo offers one of the most spectacular views of Rapa Nui, with the Rano Kau crater and the Pacific Ocean on the horizon. A setting that invites you to take memorable photos and connect with the grandeur of the place.

This sightseeing tour is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the island's ancient history, learn about the legends of the Bird Man, and marvel at the volcanic landscapes that make Rapa Nui a truly unique destination.
