Product Info

Manchester has its big landmarks, big names and big claims - but this tour is about the stories most people miss. Led by a real Mancunian and architect, this walking tour introduces the city through hidden details, contested spaces, radical history, music culture and the traces of old Manchester still visible in plain sight.

Beginning outside the former Free Trade Hall, the tour touches on the Peterloo Massacre and how this defining event helped shape Manchester’s political and civic identity. It also opens up one of the city’s most fascinating chains of connection: from Peterloo to the Free Trade Hall, and from there to the Sex Pistols gig that helped inspire Factory Records and the rise of modern Manchester music.
As the walk zigzags through the backbone of the city centre, you’ll discover how these layered histories still shape Manchester today, through protest, public memory, redevelopment and civic change.

A stop in Albert Square is not just an introduction to the Town Hall, but to the symbolic emblems, public art and overlooked details that help define the city. The Hidden Gem is not just about one of Manchester’s oldest Catholic churches, but about how changing street patterns can either preserve history or erase it almost completely.

Taking in King Street, Back Pool Fold, Corbière’s, the Royal Exchange and Shambles, the tour reveals a Manchester beyond the obvious.

Along the way, you’ll hear about the city’s changing face: from Georgian townhouses and dense slum housing to today’s forest of high-rise apartments, and how questions of power, wealth and who the city is really for are still written into its streets. You’ll also explore lost ginnels and alleyways, overlooked artworks, civic symbolism, controversial redevelopment, and the reshaping of Manchester after conflict, bomb damage and reinvention.

This tour also goes beyond standard history. Expect stories linked to Factory Records and Manchester’s underground music scene, 1980s computer game designers working from a city-centre basement, the striking Homeless Jesus sculpture, and how the 69 Theatre Company helped save part of the former cotton exchange by giving it a new future as theatre.

This is not just an introduction to Manchester’s landmarks… it’s an introduction to the city’s character: creative, political, inventive, contradictory and always changing.
