This firefly was discovered by staff at the Hong Kong Wetland Park. In 2010, the specimen was handed to firefly taxonomy authority Dr. Lesley Ballantyne, who preliminarily confirmed it as a new global species. In June 2011, the international zoological taxonomy journal Zootaxa officially established its status as a new species. Like other members of the Luciolinae subfamily, Pteroptyx maipo has huge compound eyes that occupy most of its head. These highly developed eyes are designed to effectively see the faint flashes of fireflies of the same species. Pteroptyx maipo is 7-8 mm long, yellowish-brown on the back, with black wing tips, and is the only firefly in Hong Kong that lives in a mangrove habitat.
