・Badaling Great Wall
Badaling Great Wall is located at the northern entrance of Juyongguan Pass in the Jundu Mountains, Yanqing District, Beijing. It is an important part of the Great Wall, a great ancient Chinese defense project, and a pass of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. Badaling is a key outpost of Juyongguan Pass; it was historically said that 'the danger of Juyongguan lies not in the pass itself, but in Badaling.'
The Badaling section of the Ming Great Wall is known as the 'Jade Pass Natural Barrier' and is one of the eight scenic spots of Juyongguan in the Ming Dynasty. Badaling is the earliest section of the Ming Great Wall opened to tourists. The Badaling scenic area is centered on the Badaling Great Wall and features fully equipped modern tourist service facilities, including the Badaling Hotel and the China Great Wall Museum, which was inscribed by Chairman Jiang Zemin.
The Badaling scenic area is a national civilized scenic tourism demonstration site, world-renowned for its magnificent landscape, perfect facilities, and profound cultural and historical significance. It is a world-famous tourist destination.
・Ming Dingling Tomb
Ming Dingling Tomb is located at the eastern foot of Dayu Mountain in Changping District, Beijing. It is one of the Ming Tombs and the joint burial tomb of the 13th emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Shenzong Zhu Yijun (1573–1620, reign title Wanli), and his two empresses, Empress Xiaoduan and Empress Xiaojing. Construction began in the 12th year of the Wanli reign (1584) and took 6 years to complete. Archaeological excavations were conducted from May 1956 to July 1958, making it the only Ming Dynasty imperial tomb excavated to date.
The overall layout of the surface structures of Ming Dingling follows a 'square front and round back' design, symbolizing the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of 'heaven is round and earth is square.' Ming Dingling is one of the three largest tomb complexes among the Ming Tombs. Its surface structures cover an area of 180,000 square meters, featuring three spacious courtyards in the front and a large treasure city in the back. In front of the main gate of the tomb are three white marble stone bridges. After crossing the bridges, you reach the tall stele pavilion. Around the pavilion, there are more than 300 buildings, including the ancestral sacrificial office, the slaughtering pavilion, and the Ming Dingling supervisory office. Further back is the outermost wall of the tomb complex—the outer city wall. The discovery of Ming Dingling has provided important physical materials for the study of Ming history. Its underground palace structure is considered a representative of Ming imperial tomb regulations, providing valuable data and references for the study of the Ming Dynasty tomb system.
In October 2021, Ming Dingling was selected as one of the 'Top 100 Archaeological Discoveries of the Century.' The Ming Tombs, including Dingling, have been successively announced as the first batch of key ancient architectural cultural relics protection units in Beijing, the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units, national key scenic spots, and World Cultural Heritage sites.
