You activate your pass and register your itinerary using the app. It might be confusing at first, but once you get used to it, it's a convenient app for searching train times. The purchase confirmation slip you receive when you buy the pass is a bit confusing, but the 6-digit alphanumeric code is your pass code, and you activate it by entering this along with your passport number and other personal information. Once activated and you register the trains you will be taking, the pass's QR code will be displayed. It's not very convenient for places like France where you need to reserve express trains, but it's easy to use in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria where you can ride on a whim and reservations are generally not required. In Eastern Europe, train fares themselves are cheap, so you might not get your money's worth.
Remember, you can take the chocolates home! Don't be shy about taking a little extra.
