Húsavík original whale and dolphin watching tour
2025/10/31
We were originally scheduled to go whale watching in Húsavík the day before, but due to terrible sea conditions, the travel agency changed the location and time at the last minute—to a whale watching town that almost no Taiwanese people have ever heard of—#Árskógssandur. This confirms that even with a well-planned itinerary in Iceland, things don't always go as planned 🤣🤣 But I was actually happy to be here because I had done my research beforehand and found reviews saying the chances of seeing whales here are incredibly high! It's practically a hidden whale watching hotspot in Iceland! At first, my eyes were practically popping out of my head; the whales appeared incredibly far away, and the vast ocean made it impossible to see where to look… But soon they got closer and closer, and there were more and more of them. Later, whales appeared one after another from different directions, keeping me so busy I didn't even know where to take pictures 🤣 There was even one time when two whales were breathing at the same time! At that moment, I got goosebumps and was incredibly moved! That feeling was exactly the same as when I first saw the Northern Lights 🥹💙 And now I finally understand why whale necklaces are only made for the tail! Wow, it turns out whales expose their entire tails during their last breath! The boat crew provided free hot cocoa and biscuits, so we enjoyed snacks while whale watching – how luxurious! 🥹 We'd go back to get a biscuit, and when we turned around, whales were back again! By the end, everyone was exhausted from watching so many whales, haha. The guide said we were incredibly lucky today! The boat trip was less than two hours, but whales started appearing continuously just 30 minutes after we set off! And because we were in a fjord, the boat was very stable with no big waves, so there was no worry about seasickness. 💬 At the end of the trip, I was so glad I signed up for whale watching; it was definitely the most worthwhile trip I took in Iceland! Who would have thought that being "forced to change my itinerary" would result in such a perfect whale watching day? 💙 Q: Where can I sign up for this tour? A: I initially booked this tour through KKday, the travel agency was North Sailing, and it departed from Húsavík. After booking through KKday, the travel agency N immediately emailed a confirmation email. Later, due to the boat operator's prediction of very bad sea conditions, I switched to this tour. Q: What's the difference between Húsavík and Olskógsander? A: The former is in open waters, making it easier to get seasick and more susceptible to sea conditions; the latter is in fjords with smaller waves and more stable seas, making it less likely to get seasick, and it's the easiest place to see humpback whales, although other types of whales can also be seen in July and August. If you want to join the latter, you should be able to contact the travel agency N after booking. Q: What are the benefits of North Sailing? A: They are the two largest travel agencies in Iceland. The tour provides warm clothing, and free hot chocolate and biscuits are also provided during the tour. The total tour is 3 hours, including 0.5 hours for dressing and explanation, plus 2.5 hours for round-trip whale watching. We participated in early October and actually watched about 1.5 hours.
