Popular Tours & experiences in Egypt

Egypt is a popular tourist destination and is generally safe for travelers. However, as with visiting any country, it's important to remain vigilant and prioritize personal safety. It's advisable to choose reputable tour operators or guides and avoid venturing into remote or unfamiliar areas alone. Be mindful of pickpockets in crowded tourist spots and markets, and keep your valuables secure. Confirm taxi fares beforehand or use metered vehicles. Furthermore, respecting local customs and traditions can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure a smoother trip. When going out at night, it's recommended to travel with companions and stay in well-lit areas.

The choice between a DIY trip and a guided tour for Egypt depends on your travel preferences and experience. Guided tours are ideal for first-time visitors or those seeking convenience, as all transportation, accommodation, and itineraries are arranged by the tour company. They typically include professional guide commentary for in-depth cultural and historical insights. Services like support from Chinese customer service (if booked through platforms like KKday) can alleviate language barriers, and flexible cancellation policies offer peace of mind. Independent travel, on the other hand, offers high flexibility and autonomy, suiting travelers who prefer to explore at their own pace. However, it requires handling all logistics independently and a good understanding of local languages, transportation, and safety information, making it more suitable for experienced independent travelers.

Both Egypt's Pyramids and Jordan's Petra represent glorious achievements of human civilization and possess unique charms. The Pyramids of Egypt are iconic symbols of ancient Egyptian civilization, awe-inspiring in their scale and thousands of years of history, especially the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, which are must-see wonders of the world. Petra is renowned for its magnificent rock-cut architecture, such as the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), showcasing the architectural ingenuity of the Nabataeans. If you are more interested in ancient Egyptian pharaonic culture, grand tombs, and pyramid structures, Egypt would be the primary choice. If you prefer unique rock-carved art and the sense of exploring a hidden ancient city, Petra is unmissable. Both offer breathtaking historical experiences; the choice can be based on your personal preference for cultural background and architectural style.

The best season to visit Egypt is typically from October to April. During this period, the climate is cooler and more pleasant, with daytime temperatures averaging between 20-30°C (68-86°F), making it ideal for outdoor sightseeing and exploring historical sites. The summer months (May to September) are very hot and dry, with temperatures often soaring above 40°C (104°F). Although there are fewer tourists, be sure to take precautions against the sun and stay hydrated. Egypt's festivals are often tied to the Islamic lunar calendar. For example, during Ramadan, operating hours for some shops and restaurants may be adjusted, and it's important to be respectful of local customs regarding dining during daylight hours. It's advisable to check the dates of festivals for the year of your travel to facilitate itinerary planning.

Taiwanese passport holders traveling to Egypt can currently choose to apply for an electronic visa (E-Visa) or obtain a visa on arrival at Egyptian international airports. To apply for an e-visa, you need to submit an online application before departure, filling in personal details and uploading required documents (such as a passport scan). Once approved, print the visa. If you opt for a visa on arrival, you will need to complete forms and submit relevant documents at the designated counter upon arrival at the airport. Regardless of the method, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. It is recommended to consult the Egyptian Embassy or consulates abroad or check the official website for the most up-to-date and complete visa regulations and procedures before your departure.

Egypt offers a rich and diverse itinerary. Top must-visit attractions include the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx near Cairo, to experience the grandeur of ancient Egypt. In Luxor, the Karnak Temple Complex and Luxor Temple are immense temple complexes, while the Valley of the Kings allows you to explore the tombs of pharaohs. Further south in Aswan, the Abu Simbel Temples, whose relocation itself is a marvel, are essential. For unique experiences, a Nile River cruise is the best way to explore the ancient civilizations along its banks, offering a relaxing and comfortable way to admire the scenery. Additionally, taking a hot air balloon ride over Luxor at sunrise to view the temples, diving or snorkeling in the Red Sea, and experiencing the local life at Cairo's Khan el-Khalili bazaar are all unforgettable activities.

An Egyptian Nile River cruise offers a unique and comfortable travel experience. The main routes typically run from Aswan to Luxor (or vice versa) and last about three to four nights. Its key feature is that travelers only need to unpack once and can enjoy the scenery and onboard facilities while daily stops are made at significant historical sites like Kom Ombo Temple and Edfu Temple, with guided tours providing explanations. Meals are usually included, allowing guests to savor cuisine with ease. This type of trip is ideal for travelers who wish to explore ancient Egyptian civilization at a leisurely pace and dislike frequent hotel changes. For family trips or those who prefer well-arranged itineraries and a high level of comfort, a Nile cruise is an excellent choice for discovering Egypt.

The budget for traveling to Egypt primarily depends on your travel style and preferences. For accommodation, there's a wide range from budget hostels to luxury hotels. For transportation, options like trains, buses, private cars, or domestic flights vary in cost. Dining expenses also differ based on whether you choose street food or fine dining. Entrance fees for attractions, guide services, Nile cruises, or hot air balloon rides are significant components of the budget. Additionally, shopping and tipping (Baksheesh) are part of the local culture and should be factored in. It's advisable to plan your overall travel expenses based on your desired comfort level, trip duration, and the variety of activities you wish to undertake.

Before traveling to Egypt, it's recommended to consult with your family doctor or a travel medicine clinic to assess your individual health status and itinerary to determine necessary vaccinations. Generally, ensure your routine vaccinations (such as measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) are up-to-date. Additionally, commonly recommended travel vaccines may include Hepatitis A and Typhoid, as these can be transmitted through contaminated food or water. If your itinerary involves contact with animals or visits to rural areas, your doctor might suggest the rabies vaccine. Yellow fever vaccination is typically not required unless you are coming from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic zone. Be sure to seek consultation at least 4-6 weeks before departure to allow time for vaccination schedules.

Understanding and respecting local customs and culture will make your trip to Egypt smoother. Firstly, dress conservatively, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques, where women should cover their heads and shoulders. Always ask for permission before taking photos of local residents. Haggling is common practice in markets when shopping. Regarding food, avoid using your left hand to eat or pass items, as it is considered unclean in Islamic culture. Tipping (Baksheesh) is a part of daily life; a small tip for services like waiters, porters, or guides is appreciated. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum to respect the conservative social atmosphere.
