Approximately at 5:20 AM, we depart from Muscat and begin our journey toward Nizwa, the historic former capital of Oman and one of its most culturally significant cities. Our first experience is the famous Nizwa Goat Market, held every Friday morning and widely regarded as one of the most authentic traditional markets in the country. This vibrant livestock auction is part of the larger Nizwa Souq, where local farmers, herders, and Bedouins gather to trade goats, sheep, and cattle through lively open bidding. The atmosphere is energetic, colorful, and deeply rooted in Omani heritage, offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness centuries-old trading traditions still alive today.
After experiencing the market, we explore Nizwa itself, located in the heart of the Al Dakhiliyah region. Once the capital of Oman, Nizwa remains an important cultural and historical center. It is home to the iconic Nizwa Fort, with its massive circular tower and panoramic views over the old town, as well as a traditional souq known for silver jewelry, handicrafts, spices, and dates. The city beautifully reflects Oman’s rich history and enduring traditions.
We then continue our journey to the scenic village area of Birkat Al Mouz, where we visit the ancient falaj irrigation system at Al Khatmeen Falaj. This UNESCO-recognized irrigation network is one of Oman’s finest examples of traditional water management, dating back centuries. The falaj channels still supply water to date palm plantations and farms, showcasing the ingenuity and sustainability of ancient Omani engineering.
Following this cultural stop, we begin the ascent toward Jebel Akhdar, famously known as the “Green Mountain” of Oman. Part of the majestic Al Hajar mountain range, Jebel Akhdar is renowned for its cool climate, dramatic cliffs, deep canyons, and terraced farming villages. The drive itself is an unforgettable experience, winding through rugged mountain roads with breathtaking viewpoints along the way. At the top, visitors are rewarded with fresh mountain air, peaceful surroundings, and panoramic vistas stretching across valleys filled with pomegranate orchards, rose gardens, and walnut farms.
Together, the Nizwa Goat Market, Birkat Al Mouz, and Jebel Akhdar create a perfect combination of cultural immersion, historical discovery, and natural beauty. This full-day experience captures the true essence of Oman, blending living traditions with stunning mountain landscapes for an unforgettable journey.
