Two of California's greatest natural wonders sit within easy reach of San Francisco, and this two-day trip brings them together at a relaxed, unhurried pace. You leave the fog and the city behind and trade pavement for high granite country, ancient forests, and the kind of clean mountain air that makes the whole trip feel like one long, deep breath. It is an easy way to reach the wild heart of the Sierra Nevada without the planning or the long solo drive.
The first day belongs entirely to Yosemite National Park, more than 740,000 acres of soaring rock, falling water, and quiet meadow. You spend the afternoon in the heart of the park, where glaciers spent millions of years carving and polishing the granite into the shapes you will recognize the moment you see them. The sheer face of El Capitan rises straight up from the valley floor, the rounded crown of Half Dome catches the late light, and Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America, sends its long ribbon of water down the cliffs. In the warmer months the misty cascade of Bridal Veil Falls and the green sweep of Yosemite Valley round out a scene that genuinely lives up to the hype.
As the day winds down you settle in for a comfortable overnight stay near the park, trading the trail for a good night's rest before the second half of the trip.
Day two heads south into Kings Canyon National Park, a landscape of steep granite walls and some of the deepest canyons on the entire continent. After a stop at the visitor center to get your bearings, you make your way into the forest, where towering giant sequoias, among the largest living things on Earth, rise in cinnamon-red columns toward the canopy. A gentle, shaded walk lets you stand at the base of trees that have weathered hundreds and even thousands of years, a peaceful, grounding counterpoint to the open granite of Yosemite the day before.
From there it is time to point the wheels west. The scenic drive back to the Bay Area unrolls one last stretch of golden foothills and open country, and you arrive home after experiencing granite, waterfalls, and green, and two of California's finest parks behind you in a single weekend.
