Awaji Island is one of the three major tile-producing regions in Japan, and it boasts the highest production volume of 'Ibushi' (smoked) tiles, which shine with a distinctive silver luster. The history of tiles spans over 1,400 years, and tile production has been carried on in Awaji Island for over 400 years. Here, we offer an experience where you can create your own original tile with free-thinking creativity. ～Experience Flow～ 10:00 / 13:00 ① Think of a design concept (sketching) Using a pencil, sketch your desired image—such as facial expressions or corner shapes—onto the clay base. You can create any design you like. *Even beginners can proceed with confidence by looking at reference examples. 10:30 / 13:30 ② Building the base (3D molding) Following your sketch, build up the clay to create the basic shape. Shape the general 3D form, including facial contours, eyes, nose, and mouth. 11:00 / 13:00 ③ Finishing details Using specialized tools, carefully refine the fine details. This process brings out the impressive character and individuality typical of an 'Onigawara' (ogre tile). After completion, the tiles will undergo 'Ibushi' firing, which takes about 2 months. Once firing is complete, your piece will be delivered by mail.
