Visitors to Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchiko in February should anticipate cold winter weather, with temperatures often near or below freezing. While snowfall is possible, the festival's focus is on the unique light displays. Dressing in warm layers, including waterproof outer clothing, is highly recommended to ensure comfort during outdoor activities.
Winter is an excellent time to visit the Lake Yamanaka area, especially for the exclusive Ice Candle and Sky Lantern Festival. The colder, drier air often provides clearer views of Mt. Fuji, which serves as a magnificent backdrop to the illuminated festival. This one-night-only event offers a uniquely romantic and visually stunning winter experience.
Winter typically offers the highest chance of clear views of Mt. Fuji due to lower humidity. While weather conditions can vary, the colder months often present crisp skies, making it more likely to see the iconic peak. The festival is specifically designed to be enjoyed with Mt. Fuji as a breathtaking backdrop during dusk and nighttime.
The 'Lake Yamanaka Ice Candle and Sky Lantern Festival' is a unique winter experience as a one-night-only event. It features approximately 5,000 ice candles illuminating the landscape, the serene release of sky lanterns into the night, and a dazzling fireworks display, all set against the spectacular winter backdrop of Mt. Fuji. It's a truly magical light spectacle.
During the tour, guests will visit GKB Gotemba Beer Highland's wheat field area. Here, you can enjoy a variety of drinks and a buffet. This stop provides a comfortable indoor break with refreshments and a meal, complementing the outdoor festival experience later in the day.
From the Mt. Fuji Observation Deck (富士山Deck), recognized as one of Japan's most beautiful Mt. Fuji viewing spots, guests can enjoy stunning close-range views of Mt. Fuji. The deck also offers picturesque scenery of the Lake Kawaguchiko Garden, providing a double feast for the eyes before heading to the evening festival.
The main activities include witnessing the lighting of approximately 5,000 meticulously crafted ice candles as evening approaches. Visitors can also participate in or observe the release of sky lanterns, which float gracefully upwards. The night culminates with a beautiful fireworks display, all enhancing the romantic and dreamlike atmosphere with Mt. Fuji in the background.
For comfortable attendance at the Lake Yamanaka Ice Candle and Sky Lantern Festival in February, it's essential to prepare warm clothing. This includes thermal base layers, a thick mid-layer, a waterproof and windproof outer jacket, and insulated trousers. Don't forget a warm hat, gloves, a scarf, and waterproof, comfortable winter boots. Hand warmers can also be very beneficial.
