Mount Daisen in Hoki Province is a mountain of mountain worship. Long ago, when it was called Mount Ogami, only selected ascetics would climb to the summit once a year on the night of the full moon to bring back sacred water and medicinal herbs as part of a sacred ritual and a place of Shugendo (mountain asceticism) known as Misen Zenjo. This full moon night climb is an attempt to experience and practice this ancient tradition in modern times. In the 2025 season, it will be held on the full moons of July, August, and September. In August, due to the guide's schedule, it will be held to coincide with a meteor shower rather than the full moon. In 2026, it is planned to be held in August. We will update the schedule as soon as it is decided. In case of rain or typhoon, it will be canceled. As it is held on a holiday or during the summer vacation period, children in the 3rd grade of elementary school and above can participate. Come and have the best experience this summer with your family. Of course, adults and solo participants are also very welcome.
Experience the ancient mountain worship practice and pilgrimage that has continued for 1300 years!
Every year on July 15th and 16th of the new calendar, the Misen Zenjo (now also known as the Mohitori Shinto ritual) is performed at the Ogamiyama Shrine at the foot of Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture and at the summit of Mt. Misen. Originally, it was performed on the night of the full moon in the sixth month of the lunar calendar, the 14th and 15th of the sixth month of the lunar calendar. So, I would like to climb Mt. Misen Zenjo (Mohitori Shinto ritual) in its original style (on the night of the full moon)! Why not experience a climb filled with gratitude for being alive to our now-deceased distant ancestors and a prayer to live honestly as yourself? Let's climb to the closest point to the heavens and experience the space where our ancestors who have returned to the universe and our own divine selves living on earth connect. It is a meditative moonlit climb, walking while illuminating the inside of your heart, and a determined sunrise climb, vowing to stick to your will and thoughts. For more information about this ritual, known as the "One Person Shinto Ritual," which has a history of over 1300 years, please visit this website to learn more beforehand: https://www.daisen.jp/1/10/33/51/2/7/
The tour will be conducted with two guides! Elementary school 5th and 6th graders, and middle and high school students can participate on their own!
This tour will be led by two guides: a mountain guide who also works as a hut keeper at the summit of Mt. Oyama, and a nature guide who specializes in night tours. As it falls within the summer vacation period, children from the third grade of elementary school and up are welcome to participate. Come and experience this summer challenge with your family. Children from the fifth grade of elementary school and up, as well as junior and senior high school students, can participate alone. (We will require prior consent from a parent or guardian.) The climb will take place in the middle of the night when there are fewer people, at a cool time to avoid heatstroke, and at a leisurely pace. Experience nighttime mountain climbing in the middle of summer without worrying about heatstroke. Don't miss this opportunity.
You can witness the full moon setting in the western sky and the sunrise from the mountaintop!
Watching the full moon set in the western sky and the sun rise in the eastern sky, you can dynamically experience the Earth's rotation from the mountaintop and truly feel alive on this planet.
