The largest cherry blossom festival in Gangwon-do: Gyeongpodae Cherry Blossom Festival (경포대 벚꽃축제)

Around early April each year, the Gyeongpodae Cherry Blossom Festival is held around the Gyeongpodae area. As one of the representative festivals in Gangneung, it attracts a large number of domestic and international tourists every year. The festival centers on Gyeongpodae, with a 4.3km-long beautiful cherry blossom path surrounding Gyeongpo Lake, creating a spring floral feast. Home of the figures on the 5,000 and 50,000 KRW banknotes - Ojukheon (오죽헌)

Ojukheon is the birthplace of Yulgok Yi I (the portrait on the 5,000 KRW banknote) and his mother, Shin Saimdang (the portrait on the 50,000 KRW banknote). Built between 1450 and 1500 during the early Joseon Dynasty, it was named after the dark bamboo that surrounds the house. The dark bamboo, as a symbol of Ojukheon, appears on the 5,000 KRW banknote along with the Ojukheon building. At Ojukheon, you can see the detached building where Yulgok was born, the inner quarters, the items he used, and learn about the stories between Yulgok and his mother, Shin Saimdang. This is also a major filming location for the Korean drama 'Saimdang, Memoir of Colors'.
