Leave the city behind and dive into the best of coastal Peru in this all-in-one, 2-day trip. Cruise with sea lions, ride dunes like a pro, taste Peru’s iconic pisco at a local vineyard, and fly over ancient mysteries etched into the desert floor — this tour brings together wildlife, adrenaline, culture, and ancient history in the most epic way.

Day 1: Lima to Paracas, Ballestas Islands, Vineyard Visit, and Huacachina Oasis
Start your adventure with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Lima. Travel in comfort aboard a spacious Peru Hop luxury bus to the coastal town of Paracas, a 4-hour journey along the scenic Pacific coast, and stay connected with high-speed onboard Wi-Fi (only available through Peru Hop).

Upon arrival, set off on a 2-hour boat tour to the Ballestas Islands, known as “the poor man’s Galapagos.” Spot sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and dozens of marine bird species as your guide shares insights about the unique ecosystem.

After your boat tour, visit a local vineyard where you’ll learn how Peru’s famous pisco is produced and enjoy a guided tasting of different varieties. You’ll also have free time here to enjoy lunch at the vineyard’s restaurant (at your own expense), with delicious traditional Peruvian dishes available.

In the afternoon, continue Peru Hop by bus to Huacachina, a stunning natural oasis in the heart of the Ica Desert. Enjoy free time to explore the palm-lined lagoon or walk the surrounding dunes.

Later, take part in an exhilarating dune buggy and sandboarding experience. Ride up and down massive desert dunes in a 4x4 buggy, then try sandboarding down the soft golden slopes. It’s one of South America’s most exciting natural playgrounds.

The following day, go from Huacachina to Nazca in a shuttle. Arrive in Nazca around 11:00 a.m. and go straight to the airport. Fly over the mysterious Nazca Lines, which have left thousands of people baffled for years.

Day 2: Nazca Lines Flight and Return to Lima
On the second day, depart Huacachina early for Nazca by private shuttle. Arrive around 11:00 a.m. and head straight to the airport for your 30-minute scenic flight over the Nazca Lines. Admire enormous geoglyphs in the shapes of monkeys, hummingbirds, and other figures, etched into the desert more than 1,000 years ago. Your pilot will guide you through each figure during the flight.

After the flight, enjoy approximately two hours of free time in Nazca. Take this opportunity to visit the Cantalloc Aqueducts, an ancient underground irrigation system still in use today, or relax in the town.

At 3:00 p.m., begin your return journey to Huacachina, then board your Peru Hop bus back to Lima. Relax and enjoy the ride before being dropped off at your hotel or hostel in the evening.

FAQ

1. Who created the Nazca Lines and what is their significance?

The Nazca Lines were created by the ancient Nazca culture, which flourished in Peru from approximately 100 BC to 800 AD. Their exact significance remains a subject of debate, with leading theories suggesting they served as astronomical calendars, religious rituals, or markers related to water sources. They are considered an extraordinary archaeological marvel, providing valuable insights into Nazca cosmology and advanced engineering capabilities.

2. How have the Nazca Lines been preserved for so long without disappearing?

The remarkable preservation of the Nazca Lines is primarily due to the unique desert environment of the Nazca region. The area experiences an extremely arid climate with minimal rainfall, very low wind erosion, and a stable temperature. The lines themselves were formed by removing dark reddish-brown surface stones to expose lighter, underlying soil, and the lack of natural disturbance has kept these geoglyphs intact for over two millennia.

3. What are some key facts and interesting details about the Nazca Lines?

The Nazca Lines consist of over 2,000 distinct figures, including intricate depictions of animals like hummingbirds, monkeys, and spiders, as well as plants, geometric shapes, and anthropomorphic figures. These massive geoglyphs span an area of approximately 450 square kilometers. Some of the largest figures exceed 200 meters in length, and their precise creation, visible only from an elevated perspective, indicates sophisticated planning and measurement techniques by the Nazca people.

4. What makes a flight over the Nazca Lines a valuable experience?

A panoramic aerial flight offers the most comprehensive and valuable way to experience the Nazca Lines. From above, visitors can fully appreciate the immense scale, intricate patterns, and overall context of the geoglyphs, which are largely indistinguishable from ground level. This unique perspective provides an unforgettable insight into their mysterious purpose and the ancient Nazca civilization's remarkable artistry, making it a highlight of any Peruvian journey.

5. What is the recommended way to view the Nazca Lines for the best perspective?

The most recommended and effective way to view the Nazca Lines for the best perspective is by taking an aerial flight. Flying over the desert in a small aircraft or plane allows visitors to see the entirety of the vast geoglyphs, including the complex animal figures and geometric designs, which are almost impossible to discern from the ground. While observation towers exist, they only offer limited views of a few select figures.

6. What is typically included in a Nazca Lines flight experience?

A typical Nazca Lines flight experience includes the aerial tour itself, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the geoglyphs. The service often encompasses convenient round-trip transfers from your accommodation to the departure airport near Nazca. Furthermore, many tours offer the added benefit of a bilingual host, who ensures smooth logistics and shares rich historical and cultural insights throughout your entire journey, enhancing the overall experience.

7. What activities are available at the Huacachina Oasis for visitors?

At the Huacachina Oasis, visitors can engage in thrilling desert activities such as riding dune buggies across the towering sand dunes surrounding the oasis. Another popular adventure is sandboarding, where you can slide down the steep sandy slopes. Beyond the adrenaline-pumping sports, the oasis itself provides a picturesque setting for relaxation, photography, and enjoying the unique natural beauty of the lagoon and palm trees.

8. What wildlife can be observed during a speedboat cruise to the Ballestas Islands?

During a speedboat cruise to the Ballestas Islands, visitors can observe an incredible array of marine wildlife in their natural habitat. You can spot large colonies of sea lions basking on the rocky shores and swimming in the waters. The islands are also home to diverse seabird populations, including the distinctive Humboldt penguins, various guano birds, and numerous other migratory species, making it a vibrant and biodiverse ecological experience.
