FAQ

1. Why are tourists no longer allowed to climb Uluru?

Climbing Uluru has been permanently prohibited since October 2019 out of respect for its immense cultural significance to the Anangu people, the traditional owners. For the Anangu, Uluru is a sacred place with deep spiritual meaning, and climbing it goes against their spiritual beliefs and practices. The ban encourages visitors to experience Uluru in a respectful manner, appreciating its cultural and natural beauty from designated walking tracks at its base.

2. What is the cultural significance of Uluru and Kata Tjuta?

Uluru and Kata Tjuta hold profound cultural and spiritual significance for the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of the land. They are central to Anangu creation stories (Tjukurpa), representing ancestral beings and their activities. The sites are living cultural landscapes, used for ceremonies, teachings, and passing down traditions. Visitors are encouraged to explore the base walks and cultural centers to understand these ancient beliefs and stories, respecting the sacredness of these sites.

3. What type of overnight accommodation is provided for visitors on multi-day tours near Uluru?

For guests participating in multi-day tours near Uluru who wish to experience the outback while protected from the elements, options like eco safari tents are provided. These permanent tents typically come equipped with comfortable beds, bed linen, a pillow, and a pillowcase, offering a balance between experiencing nature and ensuring a restful night's sleep. This allows ample time to complete the base walk around Uluru, explore the various walks at Kata Tjuta (such as the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge), witness sunrise and sunset viewings of both formations, and engage with the cultural center to learn about Anangu traditions.

5. What is the best time of year to visit Uluru and Kata Tjuta?

The best time to visit Uluru and Kata Tjuta is generally during the cooler months, from May to September (winter and spring). Temperatures are milder, making outdoor activities like walking more comfortable. While daytime temperatures are pleasant, nights can be chilly, so packing layers is advisable. Visiting during these months avoids the intense heat of summer (October to April), which can be challenging for outdoor exploration.

It's important to respect the sacred sites indicated by signage, where photography may be restricted. Always stay on marked paths, carry plenty of water, and be aware of weather conditions, especially during warmer periods. Climbing Uluru is permanently prohibited.

7. What is the typical time it takes to walk the base of Uluru?

This duration allows for a comfortable pace, including stops for photographs, water breaks, and appreciating the surrounding landscape and cultural sites along the 10.6-kilometer (6.6-mile) circuit.
