What is Sapporo Maruyama Zoo?

Sapporo Maruyama Zoo is Hokkaido's first zoo, located in Maruyama Park in central Sapporo and easy to reach.

  • About 140 species: see animals living lively amid Hokkaido's seasonal scenery.
  • Animals up close: the zoo has well-equipped indoor facilities and many glass panels, so you can see the animals up close.
  • Habitat-inspired design: enclosure design, feeding methods and more are planned to bring conditions closer to the animals' natural habitats and bring out their natural abilities.
  • Animal welfare: the zoo works to enhance animal welfare so the animals can live healthy, species-appropriate lives, and puts effort into various conservation activities.
  • Comfortable in every season: enjoy seasonal flowers throughout the zoo, and take a break in its many indoor facilities, air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter.
  • Guides and programs: learn about animals in a fun way from the zoo's animal specialists at the "Maruyama ZOO Guide", held with daily-changing content; on Sundays, volunteers lead the "Sunday Guide". Tour guides and various programs can also be requested at any time.

A zoo full of Hokkaido's charm, where you can take your time watching the animals while experiencing what makes Hokkaido unique.

What can I do at Sapporo Maruyama Zoo?

From polar bears to orangutans, here is what to look out for:

  • Polar Bear House: a highlight of the zoo, where polar bears and seals are shown side by side as part of the Arctic ecosystem. Watch them swim lively from various angles, including from an underwater tunnel.
  • Elephant house: one of the largest in Japan, home to 5 Asian elephants, including baby elephant Tao, born in August 2023, and Tao's mother, Pearl.
    • Water areas both outdoors and indoors keep the elephants comfortable even in Sapporo's cold winters.
    • Tao's growth from day to day is drawing a lot of attention.
  • Orangutan and Borneo Forest: a new facility opened in May 2024 that realistically recreates, indoors, the tropical environment of Borneo, where orangutans live, with ceilings up to 8 m high.
    • To maintain the plants and humidity, a squall falls every day at 14:00 during opening hours; enjoy the powerful moment from a spot under a roof.
  • Hokkaido animals: many animals unique to Hokkaido, such as the Ezo snow hare.
The entrance facade of Sapporo Maruyama Zoo displays its name above a brick wall and covered entryway.

We look forward to seeing you at Maruyama Zoo, surrounded by rich nature.
