— What You Can Expect —

Experience the dramatic beauty of Kalbarri with a 45-minute flight that offers a unique perspective on natural wonders that are otherwise inaccessible.

Begin your adventure by heading towards the rugged and breathtaking Kalbarri National Park, passing the Ross Graham lookout and along the entire length of the Murchison River Gorges. The river has carved through the sandstone, revealing steep rock faces with stunning white, red, and purple layers.

Fly over iconic formations such as Hawkeshead, Little Z Bend, Big Z Bend, and Four Ways, where the river creates a fascinating pattern with two large cuts coming from opposite directions. Continue over the loop, taking in Murchison House Station, and follow the river to the mouth as you approach Kalbarri town. At cliff-top height, marvel at the Coastal Cliffs with their striking red sedimentary rock colours. Then, experience the unique Pink Lake at Hutt Lagoon, a dramatic spectacle that stands out vividly against its surroundings. The lake’s pink hue is caused by carotenoid-producing algae Dunaliella salina, a rich source of beta-carotene and vitamin A. Covering approximately 70 square kilometres, the lake lies a few metres below sea level and is fed by marine waters through springs.

After circling the lake, return along the coastal cliffs and over Kalbarri town to the airport.

Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) is a 70-square-kilometre salt lake whose brilliant pink colour comes from Dunaliella salina algae, a natural source of beta-carotene and vitamin A.

FAQ

1. Why is Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) in Kalbarri pink?

Pink Lake, also known as Hutt Lagoon, gets its striking pink color from the presence of a microalgae called Dunaliella salina. This algae produces high levels of beta-carotene, a red pigment, as a protective mechanism against the lagoon's extremely high salinity and intense sunlight. The concentration of this pigment gives the water its vibrant pink to red hues.

2. Is swimming permitted in Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon)?

Swimming in Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) is generally not recommended or permitted due to several factors. The lagoon has extremely high salinity, which can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Additionally, it is a commercial aquaculture site for beta-carotene production, making public recreational activities like swimming unsuitable for safety and environmental protection.

3. What natural wonders can be seen during a Kalbarri scenic flight?

A Kalbarri scenic flight offers breathtaking aerial views of several natural wonders. You can witness the dramatic Murchison River Gorges, with their ancient rock formations carved by the river. The flight also glides over the rugged Coastal Cliffs, showcasing their vibrant red hues against the turquoise Indian Ocean, and provides a unique perspective of the world-famous Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon).

4. When is the best time to view the vibrant pink hues of Hutt Lagoon?

The most vibrant pink hues of Hutt Lagoon are typically best viewed during mid-morning to mid-afternoon on a clear, sunny day. The intensity of the color can vary depending on cloud cover, time of day, and the amount of beta-carotene produced by the algae. Bright sunlight helps to bring out the deepest and most dazzling pinks.

5. What unique perspective does a scenic flight offer over Kalbarri's Coastal Cliffs and Hutt Lagoon?

A scenic flight provides an unparalleled aerial perspective, allowing you to appreciate the vast scale and intricate details of Kalbarri's natural landscapes. From above, you can fully grasp the stunning contrast between the glowing red Coastal Cliffs and the ocean, as well as the expansive, artistic patterns of the Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon). This bird's-eye view highlights geological formations and the lake's color variations in a way not possible from the ground.

6. How long does a Kalbarri scenic flight typically last?

A Kalbarri scenic flight, specifically designed to showcase the Murchison River Gorges, Coastal Cliffs, and Pink Lake, typically lasts for approximately 45 minutes. This duration allows for comprehensive viewing of these key natural attractions from an aerial perspective.

7. Where is Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) located in relation to Kalbarri?

Pink Lake, or Hutt Lagoon, is located approximately 30 kilometers north of Port Gregory and about 60 kilometers south of Kalbarri along Western Australia's Coral Coast. It is situated inland from the coastline, easily identifiable by its distinct pink color visible from both the ground and especially from an aerial vantage point.

8. What makes the Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) a dazzling sight when viewed from above?

When viewed from above, Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon) becomes a dazzling spectacle due to its immense size and the varied, intense shades of pink, red, and sometimes even purple. The aerial perspective reveals intricate patterns created by salt harvesting ponds and natural evaporation, contrasting beautifully with the surrounding blue ocean and green landscape. This bird's-eye view highlights the full artistic grandeur of this natural phenomenon.
