Otsu Castle, built around 1586 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's order, was a crucial strategic point. Its most notable event was the Battle of Otsu Castle during the Sekigahara campaign, where Kyogoku Takatsugu's forces held back the Western Army. This engagement was vital to the larger battle's outcome. The castle's history is deeply intertwined with Otsu City's development as a significant castle and post town.
Otsu Castle was known as a "water castle" due to its strategic location by Lake Biwa, effectively using the lake's waters for defense. Its moats likely incorporated water from the lake, providing natural fortifications and making it challenging for attackers. This design was typical for castles built near large bodies of water, leveraging the terrain for protection.
While the original main castle structures of Otsu Castle no longer stand, visitors can explore various historical sites. These include stone monuments marking the former locations of the main castle and moat, as well as remnants of the former castle town that transitioned into Otsu-juku. A knowledgeable local guide can help identify these subtle but historically significant areas.
Otsu Castle was constructed around 1586 (Tensho 14) following the abandonment of Sakamoto Castle. It served for a relatively short but impactful period. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, its strategic role diminished. The castle was eventually dismantled, and some materials were reportedly used in the construction of Hikone Castle, marking its end as a functioning fortress.
The Otsu Castle walking tour offers an immersive historical experience led by a knowledgeable local guide. You will visit sites associated with the castle and the former castle town, Otsu-juku. The tour includes insightful commentary, hospitality at a cafe, and provides a deeper understanding of the area's rich history and culture, making the historical narrative come alive.
Otsu-juku initially developed as a vibrant castle town alongside Otsu Castle. After the castle's abandonment, it transitioned into a prominent post town along the historic Tokaido road. This transformation was significant, establishing Otsu as a key transportation hub and commercial center, bustling with travelers and merchants, and contributing greatly to its local culture and economy.
During the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Otsu Castle played a crucial strategic role. Kyogoku Takatsugu, aligned with the Eastern Army, bravely defended the castle against a siege by the Western Army forces, including Mori Motoyasu and Tachibana Muneshige. His resistance diverted significant Western Army troops, preventing them from joining the main battle, thus indirectly contributing to the Eastern Army's victory.
Participants in the Otsu Castle related walking tour receive several unique benefits. These include a special "Otsu Castle" castle card, which is a collector's item for castle enthusiasts, and an "Otsujuku" post station stamp, commemorating the historical significance of the post town. The tour also offers a full-enjoyment plan with souvenirs and hospitality at a local cafe.
