Attractions:

Tap Mun - is an island located between Tai Tan Hoi, Tai Toh Mun and Mirs Bay. Geographically, it is almost completely surrounded by country parks. Administratively, it belongs to Tai Po District. It is adjacent to Sai Kung North of Sai Kung Peninsula, with an area of 1.69 square kilometers. The Pagoda Gate, known as the Pagoda in ancient times, is a midway supply station for the traffic between Huichao and Guangzhou Fuhai Road. During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, the gate of the pagoda was called a pagoda. The Tin Hau Temple on the island was established by Dongguan fisherman in the early Qing Dynasty, which shows that Tap Mun was an active fishing port at that time.

Ping Chau is located in Mirs Bay in the northeastern waters of Hong Kong. It is the easternmost island in Hong Kong. Formed of sedimentary rocks, it is a veritable "Pingzhou". In order to easily distinguish it from Peng Chau, which is opposite to Lantau Island, picnickers are used to adding the word "East" before their names, and call it Tung Ping Chau. Its thin layered sedimentary rock (shale) is very characteristic, the natural environment is beautiful, and there are many geological attractions. It has always been a popular picnic spot in Hong Kong and is loved by tourists at home and abroad.

Geological knowledge of Dongpingzhou:

The shale at Tung Ping Chau is the youngest rock formation in Hong Kong, formed about 55 million years ago. The rocks on the island are characterized by distinct sedimentary rocks with clear bedding. The thickness of each layer ranges from less than 1 millimeter to several millimeters, and the total thickness is estimated to be 200 meters. It is like a thousand-page book recording the history of the earth. Over the tens of millions of years since its formation, the rock formation experienced many times of sea level rise and fall and long-term weathering and erosion, and finally formed today's Tung Ping Chau.

Interesting geological features:

In addition to thin layered structure, massive structure is also a major feature of Dongpingzhou shale. Most of the rocks on the shore have a massive structure, which looks like pieces of tofu or fish scales. These rocks were originally intact, but were later fractured due to strong compression by geological movements. Under the influence of seawater erosion and weathering, the cracks gradually expanded and deepened, forming the current "tofu rock" landscape.

Three major attractions in Dongpingzhou:

"Genglou Stone" are two 7-meter-high stone pillars on the east coast of Tung Ping Chau. They are named for their shape like two watchtowers guarding the island. The rocks on the island are covered with vertically staggered cracks, which are caused by the violent compression of the rock formations by geological movements. The rocks on the coast have been impacted by waves and exposed to the sun for a long time, and have experienced the effects of cold shrinkage, thermal expansion, and salt crystallization. The part with dense cracks erodes faster, and the broken rocks are gradually removed, leaving a broad platform, which is called sea erosion. platform; as for less fissures, relatively stronger rocks are preserved due to slower weathering and erosion.

"Dragon Falling Water" is a layer of light-colored siliceous rock formation on the southwest coast of Tung Ping Chau. Cross-joints and differential erosion cause the white rock layer to protrude from the surface. Because its edge is triangular ridge-shaped, it looks like a dragon entering the sea, so it is called "Dragon Falling Water". According to research data, the main component of the white rock formation is silicon dioxide, which is cemented by fine quartz particles. It has a very hard texture and high corrosion resistance. In the coastal environment with strong wind and waves, the shale with weak corrosion resistance will be eroded first, leaving the siliceous rock layer with high corrosion resistance, resulting in differential erosion. As for why a siliceous layer appears in a calm saltwater lake? Where does its substance come from? Why did it suddenly appear and then suddenly disappear? "Dragon Falling into the Water" still leaves many unsolved mysteries.

"Zhanjing Chau" is the headland at the western end of Tung Ping Chau, which was originally connected to the island. Due to the impact of the crustal movement, the rocks on the island have many sets of vertical cracks. The gravel in the center gradually falls off under the erosion of the wind and waves. The erosion speed is particularly fast in the places where the cracks are dense. The gorge is called a sea erosion canyon in geology. Looking down from a high altitude, "Zhanjingzhou" looks like a severed neck, hence the name. "
