The Lin Family Mansion & Garden was built by the descendants of Lin Pinghou to avoid calamity. Among Lin Pinghou's five sons, brothers Lin Guohua and Lin Guofang were the most capable. In 1851, they began constructing the Sanluo Mansion in Fangqiao, moving in with their family upon its completion in 1853. Subsequently, in 1855, they started planning the construction of Fangqiao City to defend against harassment from the Quanzhou people, which laid the foundation for the development of the Lin Family Mansion & Garden.
