Alps

The Alps mountain range spans across multiple countries in Central Europe, including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The range is not located in just one country but is shared by these eight nations. A significant portion of the Alps is in Austria, encompassing the eastern Alps. The western Alps are dominated by France, with peaks like Mont Blanc located on the border with Italy and Switzerland. The Bavarian Alps form the border between Germany and Austria. The Alps run through the northern part of Italy, with ranges like the Italian Alps and Pennine Alps being shared with other countries.

The Alps are called the Alps because the Latin name, Alpes, likely came from a word meaning "white" or "high," referring to the snow-capped peaks. Another theory is that the name is a borrowing from a Celtic word for "high mountain," which the Romans adopted. The English name comes from the Latin Alpes, which may have its root in the word albus ("white"). It's also possible the name is derived from altus, meaning "high". A commentary on Virgil's Aeneid suggests the Romans borrowed the Celtic word alp for high mountains. Some linguists propose a pre-Indo-European origin, possibly related to the root alb meaning "hill".

Liechtenstein is a doubly landlocked country located entirely within the Central European Alps, nestled between Austria and Switzerland.

The Alps are famous for their breathtaking scenery, role as a natural barrier and hub for adventure sports, historical significance, and iconic landmarks. They are a major global destination for activities such as skiing and hiking, host numerous Winter Olympic Games, and have a rich history influenced by their geographical position.
