Day 1: Flight from Addis Ababa to Semera – Drive to Afdera

Your journey begins with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the gateway to Ethiopia’s Afar Region. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and start the drive into the vast and dramatic Danakil Depression. Travel across arid landscapes and volcanic terrain to reach Afdera, a town known for its salt lake and traditional salt production. Enjoy the unique desert atmosphere and overnight in the area.

Day 2: Afdera – Hamadela Camp – Lake Assale Sunset & Sunrise

After breakfast, drive deeper into the depression toward Hamadela (Hamdele), a traditional Afar salt-mining village. Set up camp near Lake Assale, one of the lowest places on Earth. In the evening, witness a stunning sunset over the endless white salt flats, with camel caravans crossing the lake.Overnight camping under the stars, followed by an early morning sunrise over Lake Assale, offering unforgettable views and reflections.

Day 3: Dallol – Drive to Erta Ale Volcano

Early in the morning, drive to the extraordinary volcanic site of Dallol, famous for its colorful sulfur springs, acidic pools, salt canyons, and steaming hydrothermal fields. Explore this truly otherworldly landscape before lunch. In the afternoon, continue driving toward Erta Ale Volcano, one of the world’s few permanently active lava lakes. In the late afternoon or evening, hike to the crater to witness the dramatic glow of molten lava,

Day 4: Erta Ale – Drive to Mekelle (Tigray Region)

Arrive in Mekelle in the afternoon or evening and check into your hotel for a well-earned rest.

Day 5: Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches Exploration

Today is dedicated to exploring Tigray’s remarkable spiritual heritage. Visit the iconic Abuna Yemata Guh, dramatically perched high on a cliff face and accessible by a thrilling climb, offering breathtaking views of the Gheralta mountains. Continue to Abreha We Atsbeha, one of Ethiopia’s oldest churches, renowned for its ancient stone architecture and beautiful wall paintings. Enjoy the striking landscapes and deep history of the region before returning to Mekelle.

Day 6: Mekelle – Return to Addis Ababa
