Product Info

  • A journey visiting two of the 'Three Head Temples of Japanese Tendai' located in Otsu City: Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji and Saikyo-ji. At each temple, monks will provide a special guided tour of the temple's highlights! At Enryaku-ji, which is currently undergoing renovations, you will view the National Treasure 'Konpon Chudo' from a special 'Study Stage.' At Saikyo-ji, after enjoying a lunch featuring the autumn delicacy 'Sakamoto Chrysanthemum,' you will enjoy a talk about chrysanthemums and a herbal craft experience. About the 'Three Head Temples of Japanese Tendai' Otsu City is home to the head temple of the Tendai sect, 'Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji,' known as the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism. It also houses the head temples of the other two Tendai branches: the Tendai Jimon sect's 'Miidera (Onjo-ji)' and the Tendai Shinsei sect's 'Saikyo-ji.' These three head temples are located in a scenic area overlooking Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, once described as the 'Tendai Yakushi Pond.' The nature that allows visitors to feel the changing seasons in silence invites everyone to a world of healing. [Itinerary] JR Otsu Station (9:30) → (Hieizan Driveway) → Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji (East Pagoda, Konpon Chudo 'Study Stage' guided by a monk) → (Okuhieizan Driveway) → Saikyo-ji (Lunch: Specialty 'Chrysanthemum Gozen' → Herbal craft experience → Special viewing of the Guest Hall interior guided by a monk) → JR Otsu Station (approx. 16:00)

Enjoy a special lunch, the 'Chrysanthemum Gozen,' available only during the autumn foliage season. You will also visit the interior of the 'Fushimi Castle Relic Guest Hall,' said to be a remnant of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Fushimi Castle, with a guided tour by a monk. Immerse yourself in the deep charm of the temple through both taste and culture.

  • ■ Guided by a Monk! Final Viewing of the 'Konpon Chudo' Under Renovation! View the National Treasure 'Konpon Chudo,' currently undergoing renovations, from a 'Study Stage' built on the grounds, guided by a monk. This stage was specially constructed to allow visitors to see the renovation process up close. This is a rare and valuable opportunity that will end this year.
