October 10th (Sat), the day before the Otsu Festival main event, is 'Yoimiya'. Decorated Hikiyama floats are lined up in each town; the floats are pulled during the day, and as evening falls, lanterns are lit and festival music (hayashi) echoes from the townhouses. It is a day when the festival comes alive throughout. In this tour, you will visit townhouses (kaisho) that are usually inaccessible and enjoy a unique Yoimiya experience. What is Yoimiya?
For the Otsu Festival, October 10th, the day before the main festival (October 11th), is called 'Yoimiya'. It is a day when the festival is active all day long, not just at night. During the day, 'Yoimiya-hiki' (pulling the floats) takes place in each town, and as evening approaches, lanterns are lit and festival music echoes from the townhouses. It is a day different from the main festival, where you can enjoy the decorated Hikiyama floats and the changing atmosphere of the festival from day to night.
What is a townhouse (kaisho)?
The 'townhouse (kaisho)' in each Hikiyama town is a place for festival participants to practice music and prepare for the festival on the second floor. It is the inner side of the festival, usually off-limits to those not involved. This plan focuses on visiting these townhouses (kaisho).

At a time when the town's excitement rises to welcome the night of Yoimiya-bayashi music, we will guide you to the Hikiyama townhouse (kaisho). Experience the world of Hikiyama: First, visit the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall. Learn about the history and highlights of the Otsu Festival to build anticipation. Invited to the kaisho: Hear stories about the Hikiyama from townspeople in a townhouse (kaisho) that is usually inaccessible. See the Hikiyama up close: From the second floor of the townhouse, you will be shown the inside of the Hikiyama up close. Yoimiya town walk with a guide: Walk through the town where festival music echoes with a guide. Dinner at Uotada: Enjoy dinner at Otsu Uotada (a nationally registered tangible cultural property), a townhouse in the bustling town during Yoimiya.
