Product Info

The Yanagawa Shopping Street, which retains the atmosphere of an old downtown area, is located just a few minutes walk from Otaru Station. On this street, you will find Matsuda Inban-ten, established in 1944.
For the seal making, you will carve your own name in seal script (tensho-tai) onto a natural soapstone (Rohseki) to create a one-of-a-kind seal with your own hands.
Seal carving is a script style that was introduced from China during the Song and Ming dynasties and became a major trend among artists during the Edo period; it is still used today for stamping calligraphy works.
You can also enjoy using it for a wide range of purposes, such as stamping your paintings or letters.
For small groups, the experience takes place inside the shop, allowing you to get a close-up feel for the downtown atmosphere and daily life of Otaru while you work.
The shop's artisan provides direct instruction, so children can also participate with peace of mind.

What You Can Expect

  • The process begins with selecting the characters to be carved onto the seal face. Whether you have a kanji name or a name in Roman alphabet, you can choose to carve characters using kanji. Once the characters are decided, they are transferred onto the seal face. You will then use a carving knife to engrave the transferred characters. Even if you make a mistake, the artisan will help you, ensuring you complete a unique seal. After completion, you will receive your seal along with an ink pad and a seal case.
