Why not venture outside Narita Airport by local bus? This walk takes you through Sanrizuka, a place with a unique history that predates the airport itself. We will trace over 100 years of history, from the Railway Regiment, prefectural railways, and the Imperial Stock Farm to the old highways, the construction of the airport, and the aircraft of today. We will meet at Narita Airport Terminal 2. We will take the 12:19 JR bus to Sanrizuka, arriving at Sanrizuka Elementary School at approximately 12:50. Our first stop is the red brick gate, which dates back to the former Imperial Japanese Army Railway Regiment barracks. In 1911, the prefectural light railway opened between Narita and Sanrizuka, and between Sanrizuka and Tako, followed by the opening of the Sanrizuka-Yachimata line in 1914. Sanrizuka was a vital junction connecting the Narita, Tako, and Yachimata areas. 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the full opening of the Tako Line to Yokaichiba. There is an information board in Sanrizuka commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tako Line. We will share the story of local transportation that has evolved from the tracks built by the Railway Regiment to the prefectural railway and the current JR bus service. After that, we will head to Sanrizuka Memorial Park. For lunch, your guide will provide three 'Tako-mai' rice balls per person, purchased that morning at 9:00 AM from the Roadside Station Tako. The varieties will depend on that day's availability, so it will be a surprise! Tako-mai is a premium rice brand representing Tako Town. Grown in soil perfect for rice cultivation along the Kuriyama River basin, it is characterized by its fluffy texture, elegant sweetness, and the fact that it 'tastes delicious even when cold.' It has previously been recognized as the best-tasting rice in a nationwide competition. Lunch time is approximately 30 minutes. If you finish early, you are free to visit the Sanrizuka Imperial Stock Farm Memorial Hall if it is open. In the afternoon, we will walk while viewing the Sanrizuka intersection signpost, the connection between the Sanrizuka place name and Tako Town, the Tako Highway, Sanrizuka Church, and murals in the town. It is a unique feature of this tour to taste current Tako-mai after learning the history of how local specialties like this were once transported through this area. Afterward, we will walk along the Minami-Sanrizuka Promenade to our goal, Sanrizuka Sakura-no-Oka. The path through the trees suddenly opens up to a place where you can watch airplanes. We will disperse at Sanrizuka Sakura-no-Oka at approximately 15:30. For those returning to the airport, you can take the 15:53 JR bus from the Jutaku-iriguchi stop to Terminal 2, arriving at approximately 16:13. If you plan to visit the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences in the morning, you can join the group midway by taking the 12:33 JR bus from the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences. We will provide meeting details after your booking is confirmed. Solo travelers are welcome. In principle, the tour will run even with just one participant after booking is confirmed. * Depending on availability, the Tako-mai rice balls may be replaced with equivalent products using Tako-mai or equivalent local products. * We cannot accommodate requests for specific types of rice balls or allergy requirements. For pre/post-tour stays or bathing after the tour, you can also use the Narita Airport Hot Spring 'Soranoyu' near Shibayama-Chiyoda Station. Facility users get 24 hours of free parking and there is a free shuttle bus to Narita Airport.
