I will meet you at your hotel, the airport or cruise port, then we will sit a few minutes and discuss what your preferences are for getting around (a combination of walking, public transportation and taxis, for example), and what your priorities are (architecture, art, good restaurants, history, sports, people-watching or some combination of all of these).

The most common itinerary is to start at the Plaza de Mayo, in front of the Government House (the "Pink House") with a brief explanation of the history of the city and the significance of that square, and then take a short walk to the nearby Franciscan friary (monastery). For those interested in sports, we can continue to the Boca neighborhood for a visit of the Boca Jr. Football (Soccer) Club Stadium and Museum (entrances not included) and a walk around the historic Caminito, with its colorful houses built with scrap metal from the old shipping port. For those more interested in history and culture, we can walk from the square on the Avenida de Mayo to the historic Café Tortoni for a short break, then head to the Colón Theatre for a guided tour in English (entrances not included) of this historic opera house, a product of the city's many Italian and Spanish immigrants.

A lunch break for either group can be in the Palacio Paz, one of the large residences constructed by the city's elite families in the early 1900s and later bought by the national government. We can take a brief walk down the old shopping district of Florida Street, perhaps stopping at the Galerías Pacífico, the old railway office building converted into retail shopping, or walk through the famous Recoleta Cemetery (entrances not included).

We could end our day with coffee, tea or the drinks of your choice at one of the rooftop cafés and bars scattered among downtown office buildings and old hotels in la Recoleta and Palermo, and that give us panoramic views of the city. We will adjust our itinerary and pace as you wish during the day. I will accompany you back to your hotel or ship in the late afternoon.

  • Know Before You Go: Please leave expensive jewelry, including necklaces and watches, in the hotel or on the ship before venturing out to explore Buenos Aires. As in most major cities, the best preparation is to dress in a way that doesn't call attention to the fact that you're from out of town. If you take a wallet, reduce the contents to an identity card, the one or two credit or debit cards you might use, and small amounts of dollars or euros, and be sure your wallet is in a snug front pocket. Purses should carry the absolute minimum and should be carried in front. I don't encourage people to change euros or U.S. dollars into the local currency (pesos) before arriving. Visa and MasterCard are commonly accepted in most retail establishments across the city.
