With a voluminous brushstroke style and unconventional proportions, not only are the figures presented in a rounded posture, but animals and fruits are also inflated. Such exaggerated yet amusing paintings are the classic works of Colombian art master Fernando Botero. He once said, 'I don't paint fat people; I paint the celebration of volume.' His unique artistic expression makes him one of the most distinctive and influential artists of our time.

This 'The Magic of Volume: Botero Exhibition' will present the rich facets of Botero's work, covering oil paintings, sketches, watercolors, and three-dimensional sculptures, bringing together 118 works. We invite the audience to come and feel the infinite charm of rounded healing this summer.

【About Fernando Botero】

Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia, in 1932. He traveled to Europe in his early years to study the works of Spanish masters and the Italian Renaissance, which laid the foundation for his art. He advocated that 'beauty in art comes from the celebration of volume' and developed a unique style. His works present figures, animals, and still lifes in voluminous forms. Beneath the seemingly simple appearance lies a profound knowledge of art history and a spirit of pursuing perfection in lines, colors, and composition. Botero has been creating for over seventy years, producing countless classics, and insists on completing every piece by hand. His works are collected at the MoMA in New York, and his sculptures made him the first artist in the world invited to exhibit on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, leaving a rich and grand artistic legacy to the world that continues to inspire modern art.

【Latin America】Botero's art is deeply rooted in his life experiences in Colombia. After encountering Mexican art in 1956, he deepened his focus on Latin America, integrating the vivid street colors and rich cultural vitality of his Furusato into his creations. Figures and daily life, such as musicians, nuns, and those in power, became sources of inspiration, using humorous yet delicate brushstrokes to create unique allegories through exaggerated proportions.

【Still Life】The simplest forms are often the hardest to depict. Botero's unique style originated from his still-life creations. In his youth, he created a mandolin by intentionally shrinking the sound hole, creating an effect as if the body of the instrument was expanding outward. This led him to rethink the relationship between object proportion and volume, establishing his classic aesthetics of volume. Since then, his language of volume has taken shape, permeating all his subjects.

【Bullfight & Circus】Botero's brief experience at a bullfighting school during his youth, along with the dramatic colors and tense atmosphere of the bullring, influenced him to create a series of watercolors themed around bullfighting. The traveling circus he encountered in Mexico also became a subject of his paintings. His aerialists and clowns, while dynamic, contain a unique melancholy typical of ordinary people within their vivid presence, adding emotional depth to the series beyond mere joy.

【Versions & Religion】 Since his youth, Botero has pursued excellence through dialogue with the works of masters. His early experiences in Europe led him to launch a series of works paying homage to art giants in his own unique style. No matter who the original creator was, the final presentation can be identified as Botero's style at a glance—as he said, 'Art is saying the same thing in different ways.' For Botero, religion is not about doctrine, but about exploring form, color, and atmosphere, reinterpreting and challenging existing norms with humor and irony, with the female saint series being particularly prominent.

【Mixed Media & Sculpture】In addition to oil paintings, Botero also uses various media such as pencils, watercolors, charcoal, and pastels. In his hands, his sketches are not just drafts but complete works, showcasing the precision of lines and the sensibility of form. Botero began exploring sculpture in 1973, bringing the beauty of volume into three dimensions. For him, art belongs to public spaces, and he hopes his sculptures bring a more direct and concrete aesthetic experience, bridging the gap between art and people.
